thanks for sharing this Rikki! what you're doing is awesome. and yes, i'd like to get this pod more active with discussions regarding different dimensions of social enterprise. so if you know other social entrepreneurs and organizations out there, feel free to post them here. and also, give a shout out about this pod on your blog and friends whom you think would be interested :)

~C

      Hi

I see there is ot a huge amount of activity here - but hopefully that will change.

I am fairly new to social enterprise and even newer to Zaadz. I did actually create a social enterprise a few years ago when I set up The Professional Speakers Association in the UK - however it's social goals were limited to helping it's members to be come professional speakers - it's a not for profit organisation - but really has limited social objectives in terms of the commuity as a whole.

I now live in the city of Kingston up on Hull - know as Hull. It was one of the leading fishing ports in the UK and had extensive an ship building industry - all of which was shut down in the eighties and nothing was done to regenerate the city - as a result of which it went into almost terminal decay. Fortunately it is now beginning to regenerate BUT - there is a huge danger of multinationals screwing it all up so that the citizens of Hull do not really benefit.

My big Idea is simple really - sustainable voluntary organisations and small businesses are the key in my view to regenerating the city and keeping the profits in the local economy so that everyone benefits - one important skill they all need is to be able to communicate more effectively - on small budgets. My expertise is in sales and marketing communications especially using technology and public speaking.

I discoverred recently that many many people in the city are terrified of blogging - there is also a myth that people do not have access to technology - the city is awash with free access to the internet and IT suites - it's just that no one is teaching anyone how to use the internet to communicate and promote their organisations and network more effectively .

So in simple terms it's a social enterprise designed to engage the community with Web 2.0 tools and learn how to network and communicate more effectively in particular using younger people who are already in to myspace etc to teach the older people who have been left behind.

Well thats it for now - more about me on my profile - and a few links to my sites and blogs for even more information if you are interested.

Huggs
Rikki
