SPOTLIGHT ON 100 paintings

ch3shyr3_cat said Jan 17, 5:01 PM:

My friend and esteemed mod and fellow artist Alli challenged me to 100 paintings. It helps just get used to colors, personal technique and all that jazzy stuff.

I’m not a painter per say but I do find a lot more peace in painting than I do drawing. I’ve always been an aggressive draw-er. My hands just kind of do their own thing. It’s mindless almost.  With painting I am, until I hit a place where my colors arn’t working with me, at peace. Alot of interesting things come out as well, especially when I work with an open mind.

I wanted to share the beginnings of this challenge.

oi : this didn't turn out how I wanted it. but I like it kinda
(this was my first time working with a pallet knife, :P it turned out oddly enough)

part of a new painting. : I like this better than the rest of the painting. :p

Hi Ashley,

I hope you go for 100 and then keep going! I'm liking it a lot!
And if need a good home I'd love to have the black, white and red figure second from the bottom. Wonderful!

You are so good.  I can identify with each and every one and so look forward to more.

Doug - Ashley's work would look great among your collection.  I love when artists flow power to artists.

I agree that when artists flow togather beautiful things happen.

Doug! The painting is actually red yellow (very pale yellow)  and black. Its a compliment/contrast to the red yellow and green. They are sister paintings. It's on a 9 x 12 canvas. (I really love her too)

If you'll send me your address I'll give her to you. (As soon as I can get some stamps and packaging.)

more to come! Rest assured :p

Doug said Jan 18, 11:40 PM:

Ah Ashley Really!

I'm painting the walls in my house and rearranging everything and I have the perfect spot for her just where the sun shines in first thing in the morning.

I remember the first piece I sold, it was a mixed medium figure on paper, kind of a surprise spontaneous from a place that was beyond my thinking about art. It was 22x30 and I sold it for $300. It was the best piece I had done to date and the woman who bought it had a sharp eye and immediately found her. Of course I was thrilled and I took my girlfriend to Mendocino for a weekend to celebrate and spent the whole wad plus some.

I think of Van Gogh and how he would sell his paintings for a little cash for tobacco and perhaps a night in town and now his paintings set records for the selling price.

Wow that's just the thing, when you make something just for the love of it, how much is it worth in dollars and cents?
The price people pay for art and the value of that art are in two different universes and the fact is I don't have enough money to actually pay you the value, but would you consider this?
Would you be willing to trade for an undetermined time period?
Yes, is there one of my paintings you would consider having in exchange?
Oh I'd love to have that painting!
I'll email you K?

!!!!!!!!!!! Definently!!!! I LOVE your paintings soooo much.  :D

The first painting I sold was on another 9x12 canvas. It was of the cheshire cat from a dream I had. It ment alot to me for many reasons.

Soon enough my uncle brought his very eclectic girlfriend over and she saw it and decided she couldn't live without it. (which I'm told that is the only reason you should ever by a peice of art, If you can't live without it.)

She asked me to name a price and I couldn't for an hour because I didn't want to part with it. (but then again I needed the cash) So we settled on 40. She wanted to go higher and I didn't want to go at all.

I got him back though, my uncle gave me a print of him for christmas and he hangs happily in my room.

I agree that it's soooooo hard to put a price on paintings.. unless their are being commissioned they usually mean something very special to you apart from how well its done.

I think a painting for a painting is a beautiful idea.

Ashley and Doug – This is such a beautiful exchange.  I love what you both are doing.  Art is valued so much when it can be viewed by an audience and the art that you are putting out has such technical expertise that the emotional impact comes shining through.  I so look forward to seeing more and learning about costing as we evolve through this thread.  I need to learn too and can only share that I have had similar experiences in making my films.  I end up selling them for the market price of $19.95 after a year's work so have had to learn about volume, distribution channels and tons of other things I love sharing so we can continue exchanging.  A lot of times our exchange comes back in different forms like good will and less oppression in a culture and we are so senior to any critic that can't do the doingness like you are sharing.  What a great way to start out the new year.  I look forward to other viewpoints.

Love and bliss… Kathy

I agree with RainCrow… and so many others here! And I also think that this whole challenge is brilliant for so many reasons. It seems a great way to get over that inner-voice-that-demands-perfection, and such a wonderful means to develop a more intuitive understanding of the practice.

100 painting or 100 pages or 100 verses or 100 songs… this could be applied to so many things!

Great work with color!  You GO!  Doing A LOT of creative work in a compressed time really does open doors within oneself.  I think it’s because focusing on a silly thing like making 100 automatically stops the “it has to be good” crazies!  And THEN the good stuff, insights, feelings, connections, synchronicities, etc. roll on out!

I’ll post the second on my personal too so you can see better pictures of it and it has a fun story too, just like I don’t want to behave, which is already on my blog if you care to read about it. oi.. so my newest piece of art.. was the most annoying project I've ever worked on.. and accompanying that awesome feeling of completion is a headache, cramped hands and a hope that I will NEVER face pointilism again..

Thank you George Seurat for inspiring our professor to be sadistic enough to challenge us to match your oh so masochistic ways.

Also .. look for pictures of some very interesting art that my fellow art class crazies and I have constructed.

We plan to go to gallery for our pop art sculpture and hopefully raise some questions on the life and times of the bible.

:D its gonna be hoardes of fun.. or blasphemy.

Much love,
Ashley

oh!! I hope you didn't get the wrong impression about Linda (my teacher) she is amazing.

I totally understand the point of this assignment. We were only allowed to use red blue yellow black and white. And we weren't allowed to blend. It's ment to be seen from at least 10 feet away.

So we can understand how colors effect each other and understand optical blending.

Linda always jokes about how George Seurat must have been masochistic.. to have to paint a 10 foot mural using only dots!

you have to make a mark and then step away.. lol

I was going slightly crazy with just this lil 9 by 12 peice I couldnt imagine using pointilism as a regular medium.

I totally agree that doug should come back and talk! Doug is amazing!!

Seeing your post, Ashley, two thoughts came to mind:

wow! It's still being done –well, naturally, but to 'meet' a real live artist who's done a pointillism painting is quite something!

It looks so good! Did you use closer points for the object or were the tools different? the ones in the background seem more spaced out / bigger.

Oh- and another thought; did you see Kyle XY the TV series? Kyle used to paint pointillism really fast - but then he was a genetically engineered human!

No i've actually never seen Kyle XY but he definently has my respect.. POINTILISM SUCKS!! It's very time consuming and after a while messes with your eyes.

We were only allowed to use red blue yellow black and white. And a very very very small brush. It was annoying but I definently learned lots. :D

Hey beautiful artists!! I just finished a new painting.

It's a dream I had.

Last night.. This lady told me the secrets of the universe.. and you know what I told her.. I KNOW .. LOLOLOL.. sad thing is …. I forgot them when I woke up.. crazy huh..

It's interesting too.. that before I had that dream.. I had this canvas painted already with a green lady to add to my collection of multicolored women.. oddly enough I never finished her because I didn't like the look of a green person.. gave me the heebies. ..

Anyways.. I call it “The Bridge” because In my dream I saw the rainbow bridge.. didn't cross it though. Wasn't sposed to yet I don't think.

Hope you like it.

lots of love and light.

Hey guys!!

I know I haven't been on alot or participating in this wonderful pod, but I think about you guys all the time!! I just wanted to say that and… post a couple of my newest paintings!!

The foxes are from a dream that I had. I wrote a blog about it if you want to know more!

The one with the earth is called around the world. It began as a black canvas with the grey angel up in the left corner and the earth surrounded by smoke and clouds. It was more of a spontaneous painting.. I did it to break free from all the things I HAD to do for my art classes at IRSC.

And the last one is my very last color and design 2 project. We had to make 3 collages and then paint one and match the colors as best as possible.

Hope you all enjoy them!!!
