Thank you, Kathy!

My art…
I use to say that I can't draw to save my life. My wife says that's not true - that I could if I practiced.

But to be honest - I don't have the patience or focus (I have ADHD :)) that it takes to sit hours and hours doing tedious practice-doodles that leave me unsatisfied and frustrated because I can't get it right.

My father, who was an artist too, used slides and a projector to render the out-lines in his motifs, and when I first got a computer and Internet access I sort of picked that up. My stepmother used photography as her main source of material together with textiles.

I work solely on the computer using free stock photos, photos in the public domain and my own photos to create my art. My main software is Paintshop Pro 8 and Adobe Elements 2.

My inspirations…
Life, I think. And the NEED to create. I have made art since I was a child. I can't help myself :)

Much of what I do is what I call 'instant art', which means that I don't work long on each piece. I muck about with colors, filters, elements and suddenly I have 'the right expression' there, without knowing how I got there. On a good day I can produce 5-10 images in a row, often around a basic theme (which I never know beforehand :)).

Much of my faith goes into my work - it's difficult not to express my cultural and spiritual ancestry in my art - both negative and positive - although the negative often ends up in the Political Art section these days.

I often do political art - mostly as illustrations for my own blog entries. But I have been known to take requests for others' blogs as well.

I think that's it…:)

Hugs,
Dov

Posted blow you see examples of my political art - all of it is not in my album yet

Hi Dov!
I like your art, and am looking forward to seeing more. Your sentence “Much of my faith goes into my work..” resonates with me deeply, as no matter what I do, artistically or otherwise, there is no seperation, nothing that disconnects. That is a great thing though, as you are reporting in balance, as you said, both the positive and the negative.
In any case your work is interesting and has depth. Bring us more!

Blessed Be!

Thanks for stopping in Dov's Art Gallery today!!!

A culture is only as good as its dreamers and the dreams are dreamed by artists.

I enjoyed your blog called On The Matter Of Honoring Parents where you utilize two of your pieces inter-weaved in the story.   Happiness includes being on good terms with one's parents or those who brought one up.  One cannot overlook the fact that almost always, parents are acting from a very strong desire to do what they believe to be best for the child.

From a child's point of view parents are not always easy to understand but we should try.  Not everyone is raised by real parents so it's better to be aware that there are others that help bring up children.  I helped raised a girl of 11 that lost her mom and 2 others from divorce so understand that others that help children should know they are validated and so right for being there if things don't work out for kids.

Kathy, thanks!

Happiness is some times to make a clean break from one's family of origin, accepting that “yes my mother's a sadistic asshole and my father an abusive drunk”.

The point I am making in the blog entry is that if our parents are abusive, and do not care for us when we are children, we have no obligation to honor them beyond the honor and respect we grant any stranger.

In fact, to rightly honor our parents, as our biological origin, we have to honor ourselves first - and that means leaving any toxic situation our parents have created that we are living in or have lived in.

The Command to honor one's parents presupposes that they are worthy of that honor and are true to Torah and G-d in their care for us when we are children.

It's a good point, Dov. The commandment to honour has been so problematic to many, I think, where there has been abuse, neglect and abandonment, among other things.

Hi Nicole,

Yes!  There are some easy cases where one can love parents interestedly. Then there are more difficult cases where one dislikes one parent.  On this kind of scale, the very difficult case dislikes both parents and is propitiative to them.  I have found in handling them on their prenatal area with some they came from a foreign tongue.  This may or may not be true for all but is measurable to the degree of hours spent to help clean up such a mess where even those parent's parents spiraled down and became contagious to future generations.

In cases you describe in reality, there is no choice but to disconnect if it is violating their human rights.

Meenakshi, I am glad you liked the Grand Canyon picture(s).

About the style…: I was bored (I bore easily :)), and felt like I had tried just about every method there was… (I was wrong of course, but that's how it felt :)).

I have always been fascinated by artists who look at a view and render it totally off-color (i.e use colors that objectively are not in the view) but still manage to re-create the view in some way.

So I found a GC picture online and looked at where there were natural divisional lines in the lanscape - and drew a line on a separate layer, and then on to the next divisional line and so on until I had all the lines I wanted, and then it was sort of like *paint-by.numbers* - simply find one color in each 'field' using the color-choosing tool (dropper) in PSP8, and then I flood filled each 'field' with the color I had chosen. I think I used 8 or 10 layers (many duplicates of each layer) altering the blend and opacity in each layer - to let the texture of the original picture shine through and then a couple of watercolor filters.

Yes, it is an unusual style, and as you can see from my album, I have (so far) made only three pictures using this particular technique.

Hugs,
Dov

Meenakshi  I have read some your writings.  Each artist expresses through a lot of mediums with different tools such as writing, music, painting, graphics, photography, acting, IT, architecture, parenting, creating a home, cooking, etc.

An artist can generate two way communication between their choice of artistic presentation for audience response.  You do this as a leader here weaving and carving out words for others response. You are worthy of being paid too… it's that good!!!!

Re: Dov's Art Gallery

SillyOldBear said Jul 7, 2:21 AM:

Kathy, that is true! Many people excel at what they do to a degree where what they do cease to be merely good handiwork or knowledge put in practice and become pure artistery. A good (however subjective) example of this is the difference between Yevgenij Plushenko (male figure skating) and Alexei Yagudin (dito) - where Plushenko is the artist par excellance, while Yagudin is merely very, very technically skilled. “Having IT vs Not Having IT” as it were.

On the other hand, I can relate to what Meenakshi is saying - I am not a writer (oh, I dabble), but I am not a literary artist. Whereas Meenakshi is…I think it's important to reclaim and use the proper designations.

That is one of the drawbacks on the errosion of language - ARTIST these days means not only someone who expresses through various Art media, (visual art media) but anyone who expresses, regardless of medium.

Example: Rembrandt was an ARTIST or visual artist - John Steinbeck was an AUTHOR or literary artist. Michael Jackson was a SINGER/COMPOSER or musical artist. But not an ARTIST. The errosion of language can be very deceptive and in my mind down-right insulting at times, because it some times gives the impression that something is what it it isn't. I don't mind being in the company of MJ, but I really dislike being put in the same category as some of the nickel and dime singers out there, who could not carry a tune even if their lives depended on it.

I am an ARTIST or visual artist, because I use visual means to express myself, Meenakshi is an AUTHOR/WRITER or literary artist. We both excel beyond mere skill at what we do.

Thoughts?
Hugs,
Dov

Thanks for putting your works in categories Dov.  I added them
to the intro/orientation.
It is like walking into the different rooms within your gallery.

I enjoyed Torah Study and learned a lot by viewing it.
It is the kind of digital art that says volumes.  Is it also
included in one of your Blogs?

Thank you Kathy, for adding the links to the intro :D That was very kind :)

I don't think my Torah Study 2 is included in any of my blogs - I originally made it as a Room Illustration for one of the Rooms in AST, but never used it as that - instead I used Torah Study 1.

That is actually very often how my art begins - I need an illustration for a blog, or forum post, and then go look for photos to work from.

Dov

Photoshop Elements does the same things as my Photoshop CS3.  Once you use your tools for the technical expertise, it is still the aesthetics and your own sense of communication injected into each piece that is senior.

Thanks for showing readers “The Winter King”'s  better version

It speaks coldly.

One trick I learned on Photoshop was to put a section of warm and a section of cold so I tried that and it is fun.

Hi, It doesn't matter which program.  Here… I will show you how it looks with Starry Night with Vincent Van Gogh. The first one is cool & the second one I added cool and warm filters so it shows better on the web.  A filter is like the green over your tiny headshot above where you control how much light you want.  On Vincent's picture… the yellows were warmed up by me and the blues cool.  Hope that makes sense.  Have fun!
