Co-Creative Exercise- Gaia Minute Icon

Meenakshi said Sep 29, 12:23 PM:

I wonder if we could place together here, artwork by the artists here, for the The Gaia Minute

: 9:09 :
[The Gaia Minute
____

Each day at 9:09 in the morning or evening, let's take a minute or more to contribute to the peace and harmony of Gaia, our Mother Earth, by raising our vibration and holding in our hearts all sentient and insentient beings.

To do so, we can pray, meditate, hold intention or simply visualize all Gaia, and ourselves, as healed, healing, whole, radiant. When thousands of people join together in an endeavor such as this, the energies so generated can bring miraculous changes. And when each of us does it in  our own time zone, our Mother Earth and all of benefit from a round-the-clock and round the world healing.]

This is an image that came to my inner eye:

“a strong, healed, and healing Gaia - Mother Earth with all her children. With immense love in her eyes.”

We are looking at her, connected heart to heart,  and she at us [animals, humans, crystals, stones, earth, wind, fire, water….]

Maybe we can make one or several icons for this project?

What a treat! I feel that together we'll be able to create a wonderful collage…keep 'em coming!

We just have to ensure that they are royalty free/ not protected by copyright.

The two above with the Gaia flower are Gaia's logo which you can ask the Gaia Team. I just added the concept. The rest are from my mind + the one below & you can have any of them.

I have a question. That image in the center on top, of earth is from 123rf. I downloaded it when  it was offered free.
They say:
“Free! Free! Free! 123RF.com and our Contributors present our World of Free Images. These images are free for you to download and won't be counted towards your credit download nor would it affect your subscription download quota for the day.

You may download and use the blog res images under a Free Image Licensing Agreement (limited to 10,000 copies usage) from 123RF.com.”

So that means, it's okay to use this way, right?

Pretty… now that is a talented media player!  It speaks very worldly, hm.  To answer the question, you can use their art under their terms & conditions which gives the do's and don'ts. From what you are doing with them is fine & free as I see it. It's a nice website! A lot of websites have what is called freemiums with the idea that that opens the door to a lot of consumers buying some of the upsales on the site.  Example: At the top on Gaia today, it has a banner: UPDATE: Have you entered the next Gaia Book Giveaway? This will bring in a lot more traffic and there will also be a large percentage (hopefully) that purchase things or have that option. When a singer is on Oprah, I have noticed at the end of one of the shows I was interested in watching, that for 2 days people could go to her site & get the latest Barbra Streisand CD free.  So it is on the web & TV.

This is about a writer but it applies to ANY intellectual property.

Someone recently e-mailed me asking how he could copyright a book before it’s published. Technically, even in draft form, your book is copyrighted.

Having their book stolen is one thing many novice writers worry about and yet it’s a rare occurrence. One of the best things you can do is not create a great deal of fear around the idea by worrying about it.

However, there are several simple things you can do to help protect yourself. You can place yourname ©2009 on each page of your draft or manuscript to make copyright clear to anyone reading the manuscript. However, if someone actually did try to copy your book and you wanted to go after them, you’d need to prove that you wrote it first. How do you do that? You may want to mail yourself a copy of a draft of the manuscript, and do it again whenever you significantly edit the manuscript. Have the post office stamp the date of mailing on the seal of the envelope.  When it arrives in the mail, put it in a place you can easily find it.
According to many authorities in the publishing industries, this is admissible evidence in a court of law.

While you don’t need to register your book to copyright it, you can register a work with the US Copyright Office. Now, I am a creative coach and author, not a lawyer, so please check with a lawyer for any specifics regarding your particular project. And feel free to check the US Copyright Office Website FAQs for answers to additional questions.

Thanks for the clarification Kathy; and also for the information. I do hope others join in this co-creative exercise.

I just wanted to clarify, Liza, that if anyone owns the copyright and doesn't mind their  picture being used, to consider posting it here….
Can the picture I posted above be somehow improved, ~KES? Edges blurred perhaps?

Hi all,
I do not think it is so much that I own and have copyright my images and such or would mind participating. What I do not see is clear guidelines as to what the intentions are for these images. For example: Will this images be used at some later date for publishing something? Basically state what the intention is and allow for those to make a choice on what image they would like to submit. I think people need to be educated first prior to making that choice. That is why I was really grateful for the explanation in our earlier discussion.
Is it possible to update the top thread and give more details on where this may go?
Liza

Liza, this is a great question; I see I need to put some thought to this–I was thinking of it organically developing and in a way, your questions are helping to achieve that. These are my ideas, and each person may have their own. There are no 'rules' and even if they seem to come up, they can always be changed! Sorry not to be more specific than this.

So right now, I feel the need to dream a new icon that to us, as people on Gaia, represents our shared vision of the Gaia Minute. The making of it is as satisfying as what it will turn out to be. What will it be used for? Perhaps on webpages, perhaps printed out and distributed…what do you feel about this?

I love an icon!  It helps create a brand for an item.  I look forward to seeing the one that gets picked.  We can help send out newsletters to join in the Gaia Minute.  Once the icon is created it will help be a reminder to this activity even without reading the posts… generates a familiarity.  The copyright is just one of the legal rudiments. We can create one that is a creative commons if you don't want to do the $35.00 filing fee on copyrights. The Gaia Minute isn't for profit so splurge on creating what you want by not using copyrighted pieces or asking permission.  The other alternative is pay someone to create an icon through the branding process and surveys.

Hi Meenakshi,

“I wish I could draw”  I am a self taught artist. I still learn as I go, but I have come a very long way as an artist. You may find your creative side and what it prefers, it could be from jewelry making to wreaths, from paintings to music or photography.
If you want something there is nothing standing in your way from doing it. It may take you time to develop the skills. I know it did for me and I still am growing as an artist. I can say that this is an important part of who I am and I am really glad I did and do what I am doing now, because it has opened me for other opportunities and allowed me to explore.
Good luck to you on your journey. No matter what you chose to do just believe you can and that is the first steps toward creating:)

Hi Kathy
Note to self;  while posting on threads do not get distracted by scrolling up, looking the the pictures and think your post will still be there prior to hitting “Post reply”

I think the icon needs to convey love and healing, something simple that makes people smile.

The orange icon is beautiful but POW. If the colors were softer……..I like the pink lotus flower, the red heart across the map and the clay earth clock.
But I am drawn to lotus flowers and water lilies lately…whats that about?

I think that it depends on whether your going to be selling material with the Icon on it or just doing promotional give aways, like free e-cards and such. That needs to be addressed. So just let us know what you think the bigger picture is, It may start out as free promotional uplifting items and grow to something that is a marketable/sell worthy product in which case the agreement between the artist and Gaia would then change. That is assuming you would accept work that is not copyright free. I think opening up to that may open up more possibilities for the icon.
Some artists may need to feel they have to protect their work because they value it and that is not a negative thing or quality in a person. It's OK.

Talk more soon,
Hope you have a beautiful day!

Hi Liza,

I can totally think with this viewpoint more than the other.  I love the concept you've painted.  It is the best viewpoint in the world to have all see the value of the artist & I appreciate your putting this out for everyone.  On marketing “come on” tech you have nailed it.

Create want without giving away the whole of a project.

Good thoughts. Thanks Liza; the paintings in my mind's eye are like mystical visions and perhaps one day I will be able to show them on a screen!

I think it'll be wonderful if we can do something fresh and new just for this; something co-creatively –like I make a background…and someone brings something else. What I'd meant abt copyright is, that we don't just take a picture from the web, unless it belongs to us and we're willing to share it…Liza, I completely agree with you that if something is to be sold the artist or writer should be acknowledged and copyrights protected….

~KES, am I right in thinking that I doubt anything abt this will be sold?

I have a question: what do you all  think this group can do for an artistic participation of the Gaia Minute? Maybe my idea of an icon is completely 'wrong' or not what's 'required' [not sure what words to use here]'. Is there another idea that you can think of? I'd also like to say that if you feel this is a really silly idea of mine, Kathy, to just let it go.

Liza, as to lotuses, I've been seeing them too; blogged about how we seem to be petals in a lotus; and  'felt' the fragrance [mixing senses here!] in the GAia Minute call this week!

Your talking to someone who is 42 going on 43 and still loves her childhood fairies she dreams about and creates. They are my treasure and I love what happens inside when I do create them:)

So I don't think this is silly at all, I think its really sweet, thoughtful and inspiring and why not? I like when people participate and are motivated enough to get the job done. Its nice when people work together Meenakshi. We each can accomplish so much more together than alone.
I been doing something on another thread too. So I understand.

I took pictures of lotuses and waterlilies this year…..a lot of them. I realized something special about them too. They have this “aura” thing going on and actually glow from within.

Oh The other thing I forgot to mention while I think it is a great idea. I think that those who do participate should create their own icon that comes completely from their own heart. So Meenakshi maybe give those artistic thoughts a try!;) That way you create it as you visualize it.
