This is what is written in the Encyclopedia Britanica under the definition of TAROT: Sets of cards used in spiritual counseling, (some may say… fortune-telling), by divination of symbols. The origins of tarot cards are obscure; cards approximating their present form first appeared in Italy and France in the late 14th century. Modern tarot decks consist of 78 cards, of which 22 have pictures representing forces, characters, virtues, and vices. The remaining cards are divided into four suits-(1) wands, batons, or rods, (2) cups, (3) swords, and (4) coins, pentacles, or disks-of 14 cards each. Each suit has 10 numbered cards and 4 court cards (king, queen, knight, and page). Modern playing cards evolved from these suit cards. Initially used as playing cards, tarot cards were imbued with esoteric associations in the 18th century and are now used widely for fortune-telling. Each card's basic meaning is altered by the card's position in the spread of cards laid out by the reader, by the card's orientation, and by the cards that are near it. |

Well, here is my two cents worth of what I know Tarot is: The Tarot was developed by the Masters of Wisdom, also known as the Inner School, of which there are 36 individuals incarnate and discarnate operating on the planet currently. The cards were created to hide the Ageless Wisdom teachings through symbolic representations of our consciousness in different forms. The pictures of inner symbolism were placed on playing cards to hide the true inner wisdom teachings from the organized church at that time, (about the 12 century), because the Church would kill anyone not following the current dogma of Christianity, thus the secrecy was extremely important to those who wished to learn the inner teachings. The Minor Arcana are the ones most people use for divination purposes, although the Major Arcana (the 22 Keys) are mostly used in the work I practice, that of practical occultism, in the work of the Builders of the Adytum mystery school. The true purpose for the keys is the transmutation of the inner self to achieve a higher state of consciousness, a Buddahood, if you will of becoming a self-enlightened human being and eventually breaking the need for reincarnation. The pictures on the Keys help us to stimulate those inner areas of our consciousness for transformation of the personality through the subconscious mind. These keys can also be used for divination purposes to help others find answers through principal of understanding of their experiences.
