The Sacred Pool - Masters, Mystics, Saints

In my search for The Real, I have read many texts, many words from many masters, saints and mystics from around the world and from many religions. One thing that I have found is that they all, when you get into the core, down to the zaadz of them, they are all the same. Those lovers love the same...(more)

Eastern Orthodox

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good books on Eastern Orthodoxy? I know plenty about the western Christian traditions, but next to nothing about EO. I recently learned that the Eastern church emphasises the resurrection, where the Western church emphasises the crucifixion. I guess this is the primary thing that leads me to learn more about the Eastern Orthodox tradition, as I believe that the resurrection was more important than the crucifixion.

Just did a quick search through the zaadz book search and found this one.  http://books.zaadz.com/146503/bread_upon_the_waters/by_peter_reinhart_peter_reinhart
not sure if it's any good but the page shows the zaadzster who recommended it and he can tell you more.  Hope that helps my friend!

For Eastern Orthodox mysticism and spirituality, I highly recommed the following:

***”A Night in the Desert of the Holy Mountain”, by Hierotheosis Vlachos, translated into English by Effie Mavromichali, ISBN 960-7070-04-6. It provides an excellent in-depth glimpse into the spiritual practice and Divine Light-mysticism of the tradition.

***The five volume set called, “The Philokalia”, Faber and Faber books, a collection of writings by various Saints and mystics.

***”The Syriac Fathers on Prayer and the Spiritual Life”, translated by Sebastian Brock, Cistercian Publications. It's a kind of “Philokalia” of Syrian Christianity and includes excerpts from the writings of Saint Isaac of Nineveh, who is one of the great Saints of Orthodoxy and popular with monks. Isaac was also a Light-mystic, as were many of the Syriac saints – one of the best books ever published on Christian spirituality as far as I am concerned.

Blessings,

James
