FLAG FOR REVIEW - not clear!

Sandra said Nov 19, 2007, 4:57 AM:

I'm not sure where best to post this but I've had several emails from people saying they do not understand what 'Flag for review' means. I'm doing my best to explain - I haven't clicked on it yet but I'm sure if there is a little notice explaining it and asking if you are sure you want to go ahead, that would be helpful.

– for those of you who are not clear about this function, this is my understanding of it: you 'flag' it because you feel that the content is really inappropriate in the context of the zaadz mission statement and their terms and conditions. - for example is racist, violent, abusive etc.

(Once again, as I moderate a creative writing pod, I think the distinction between 'flagging' behaviour vs content is useful to keep in mind - i.e. sometimes a poem is very expressive of 'anger' – but the writer is not being abusive, or a short story could explore issues of racism but not be 'racist'. Fine points indeed, but worth exploring).

Love,

Sandra

Once again, I'm getting more emails about this, people totally unclear about what flagging means and flagging things they think they are giving 'positive feedback' on…

Team??

Hi Sandra,

Flagging content for review means you believe that that content violates our terms of use agreement.  Flagging should be done rarely and only in those cases.  However, the “weight” given to flagged content is much less than that given to “I liked it”.  I don't know the algorithm.

'Flag for reivew' means you're spending a seed to say that you think an entry or post violates our terms; that is, that it doesn't reflect:

“…reverence, compassion, respect for yourself, your fellow members, and the law, and a desire to grow and to give to the world.”

I agree completely that it ought be a response to conduct, or behavior, rather than content–though I do think that some content (again, racist or, say, violently pornographic) really has no place here.

Right now, when you click the 'Flag for review' button, a little pop-up asks you to confirm that you're spending a seed to weigh in on a post that you find inappropriate. I think we could do more to explain what this means, though, so I'll look into changing that pop-up to include both a reference to the terms and a reminder that it should be used only in cases where these are violated–and NOT to express disagreement, difference of opinion, or your belief that the post is of poor quality. We'll take abuse of the flagging button quite seriously.

Thanks Siona, Matthew.

My main concern is exactly what you have spoken to, Siona - it's regarding people who do not have a general idea of what's going on with the seed system - who are confused and don't know to come here for explanations… so I'm glad to hear about the pop up window on Flag for Review, that's great.
