OK, I finally posted my magnum opus after all my learning which started when I entered this thread. Check out WHAT ARE and HOW TO: PERMALINKS, HYPERTEXT, HYPERLINKS in the How Tos and FAQs pod, by clicking on the blue text earlier in this sentence! OK, figured out the advantage: the permalink gets people to a more specific item than is possible from a web URL, which is a whole page that might contain many items, each--on the Zaadz site--with its own permalink address. any other advantage?

but there are THREE other fields in the Link To dialog box, besides URL, and I would like to know what these are about, even though it appears they are not essential to the process!!!! I don't recall that you mentioned them in your webcast demo.

I have written my "complete idiot's guide to permalinks, hypertext, and hyperlinks on the zaadz site," but am awaiting this info about those other fields before posting it and then after posting it can be edited for correctness. Or maybe I should email it to you first for correction???? Let me know.

Hi Matthew, I was finally able to access your webcast demo, and actually I knew everything you showed, so I guess I have learned something. However, I am still mystified by those other two fields in the link dialog box. What is Target--open in same window or different window, and the field below that, which I forget the designation of? The process seems to work fine without filling those in, but there must be some point to them, something they enable!!!!! So at this point I am poised to do for "Permalink" what I did for "clouds," but I need to know about those other two fields. And I suppose I ought to explore Unlink as well. Thanks for your support!! And BTW I tried to access the webcast from a friend's uptodate PC with DSL and all that, and it would not load. So I am here at the Mac store and was able to access the webcast demo from one of their floor models. Thanks again, Matthew. Well, one final question. I don't see that the permalink url is any easier to copy and paste than the original url. In fact, it is longer. So what's the advantage? And I see BTW that I CAN create my own "library" of permalinked items, simply in a private blog entry, in which the text that becomes the hypertext is the name of the item I would be looking for a way to get directly back to. OK, Matthew,and if no one comes along with help, will you? I learned how to do hypertext to an address that is simple enough for me to copy down and type into the little box, and have done 3 in my profile and blog. Apparently if I type an address anywhere that automatically becomes a link, so that's not a problem! To create the 3 I did, I didn't fill in the "target" field in the little box, and it worked anyway. I don't know what to put in that box.

Hi Vector,

By "textbook," I think you meant to say "textbox". It's called a textbox because it is a box (or rectangular-shaped area) in which you type your text. This is hypertext.

As for the rest of your questions, I'll let our member-base field them.

Yes, here are the questions generated by the rest of your post. I am left totally guessing what steps you went through to put those links into the text of your reply to me. Here are my guesses. To know what to do, I need step by step what got highlighted, what got clicked on, etc. Guesses: First you clicked on the Permalink icon for a particular post, like Joshua's April 4. Then you went up to the toolbar and clicked on the closed chainlink icon. Then somehow you opened your response to my post, and maybe you placed the cursor where you wanted the link to appear, and then----what? I can't even guess. And none of this involves typing in a webpage address. Or even highlighting text. Or using the broken link icon. So what the FAQ says seems like a different process entirely. and ditto what Sharon said. And I still have no clue the answers to my questions about what Joshua meant and what Brian was talking about. Copy what? paste where? So your post shows me more of what is excitingly possible, but not at all how to do this particular example of use of permalinks. So you begin to understand what I don't know and need to know? But I am sensing that I thought permalinks were like bookmarks, and they are not. Or I could maybe turn them into bookmarks for myself, within zaadz, by making a private blog entry in which I write what a place is, and then insert the permalink to that place. ?? And collect them all in that entry. Aloha to the max, OM Bastet aka 1Vector3 Vector 3 is a large group soul. I am one embodiment it created and operates.

Thank you for your smile and offer, Matthew, because there is indeed still confusion, but we are on a productive roll here, and I am optimistic we can generate a really comprehensive answer, I hope comparable to my What is a Cloud? answer. you can see the difference a real Beginner's Mind makes. Let's take it in chunks. Here are the questions I had after reading the FAQ about how to add hypertext in blog/pod/messages, etc. What does "the textbook" refer to, that is mentioned in the question itself? What is A or THE "textbook?" What is "hypertext?" I never heard the term before. What does hypertext have to do with links? "The broken chain link [icon] is used to end the link where you want it to stop." All I understood of that was the reference to the icon. What does "end the link' mean? Doesn't the link stop where your highlighting ends? "Address of the website you are linking to..." How does the system know where to put the highlighted material within the entire website whose address you are entering? What I apparently do understand that some Newbies might not is that whatever you highlight ends up somewhere, as blue text, and when that is clicked on, the entire page (?) your highlighted material was on will show up on the clicker's screen. So that is my first round of questions from your last post. Now I will go back and see what is left for me to understand from the rest of what you said. Thanks a ton for your patience! OM Bastet

Let me give you a working example of how permalinks might have helped the post I'm replying to here :)

What I'm going to do is use the permalinks on those references you made. I'm going to embed them into some text here using the "link to" option on the tool bar. If you want more info on how to add hypertext, see this FAQ.

I have understood ALMOST nothing of what has been explained so far. a REAL Dummy! However, Peggy J, see, I did find my way back here, which I was despairing of. And the zaadz for Dummies item has NOT been deleted yet, so I found that too. wow, I am learning SOMETHING. For example I had not NOTICED the Search this Pod function before. That will be a godsend for me. A lot of what newbies need to do is NOTICE things, eh Matthew? I am dividing my huge question-list into things that are REAL questions and things that would be answered by doing and then noticing or by noticing in the first place (like the existence of the Search this Pod option.) I do APPRECIATE all answers given so far, and I know that when I receive an answer I understand, all future Dummies are likely to, as well. I think I understand how to insert a link to some z content in an email to someone, from Sharon. But there must be an in-site use that still escapes me entirely. Suppose I click on the Permalink button of some entry somewhere--a post, a blog entry, a quote, whatever. What then, for me within the site? For example, in my pages is there a section called Permalinks You Have, which shows up, and enables me to go right back to the item? I am sure the answer to this question awaits only my experimenting, but the computer system I am on most of the time can't cope with this technology, and I have yet to try it on the uptodate system I sometimes have access to. And it would be nice to have an upfront explanation ready for newbies, anyway, right? Those who need to know BEFORE they do. I love and appreciate everyone who spends their time and energy helping us new folks learn to use this totally mindblowingly awesome opportunity initiated by Brian, who can never be thanked enough. I can't believe I know this one!

I know what it is like to not even know what the simplest things mean with computer know-how.

When you post a comment, you can click on the permalink icon and the page will reload with a number added to the end of the URL (that is the box at the top with all the "http:// pods, etc info").

You can highlight that info in the URL and Press Control+C to make a copy of that info. You won't see anything though until you do the next step. It will seem like nothing is happening.

Then you can send you friend an email to go read that specific post by hitting Control+V on the page in your email letter and, Voila! the http address will appear for your friend to click onto and immediately go to that page, And that specific post.

When you hit permalink, keep your eye on the URL area, and you'll notice an additional number will be added to the info already there...that is the specific address to that specific post.

I still don't understand it. I click on Permalink and then what? Does the info automatically end up somewhere? Where? Or Do I have to then highlight something, (what?) copy it, and then where do I paste it ? I would really like to be able to use this but it is totally new to me. And I appreciate anyone who will answer me in a way I can understand. Thanks for your time and attention! OM Bastet
