Nan-in, a Japanese wise person during the Meigi era(1868-1912), recieved a university proffessor who came to inquire about Zen. As Nan-in was pouring the proffessors tea he let it overflow and just kept pouring. The proffessor shouted “What are you doing?” To which Nan-in replied,”Like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations, How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?” |
