Favourite slogans

What are some of your favourite slogans? I find myself drawn to “Drive all blames into one”. It just resonated with me when I read it. I’d be interested to hear what other ones you have found to resonate with you.

I love the saying “Like the ants that have nothing to do but dig all day, I have nothing to do but what I want, and be kind, and nevertheless uninfluenced by imaginary judgements and pray for the light”

That’s a great quote Erik. I was reminded of this recently. It’s great to keep this slogan in mind.

Pat mentioned a great slogan that has really inspired me… “begin taking and sending with yourself”. It has led to all sorts of things that I do for myself..running, meditating, etc, that really enable me to take care and do things for others. I encourage anyone who is a caregiver to take care of themselves and watch how it enhances their caregiving.

That is also my favorite saying. I like the way that is stated, but I also use a variation of this slogan, that I find helpful, “All suffering is due to ego clinging.”

The first slogan that I resonated with, and the one I always remember, is “Abandon all hope of fruition.” There's nothing to become, no better future off in the distance. Everything I need is right here, right now.

There is a book that is helping me really grasp that. It is called “loving what is” by Byron Katie. Everything is exactly as it should be, right now.

Pema Chodron explains this much more eloquently than I can. Here's the site. My interpretation of it is to look beneath the anger and blame and see what is really at the heart of the situation.

My understanding of that slogan is that at the root of every source of my suffering, problem, hassle, inconvenience, (even ephemeral / conditional happiness)* is one thing: ego clinging. The problem is my demand that things be different than they are, not the situation itself (and this is the case for every situation). If I release my ego clinging demand that things be some other way, then the situation “just is” - it is no longer suffering (or setting the occasion for suffering)*.

So the slogan is drive all blame into this one.

- Pat

* Happiness that is conditioned on some temporary state of affairs that I insist I must have, or have more of, or can't live without, etc. merely sets the occasion for suffering - because all things change.

Thanks Pat and Wendy, I checked out the Pema Chodren site and found you could link to a host of other teachers explaining that phrase as well. It is about ego clinging being the cause of sufferring, which is one way I've seen the 2cd noble truth explained.

I do agree with this essential wisdom. I believe that where one goes with it can be problematic. It is not easy to be without ego, and we need to have compassion for ourselves as we cause ourselves suffering. Laying harsh blame on ourselves for creating our own pain just creates more pain.

One of my favorite sayings is a part of a prayer, “bless and empower us that confusion itself dawns as primordial awareness”.

Practically speaking,
Taking blame-giving away from others mellows them out and removes the conflicting attack.
Causing yourself to be an intimate part of all troubles to relive suffering from all is empowering and beautiful. IMHO

“Drive all blames into one” is one of my favorites too. A friend confessed that the first time. He heard read it he thought it meant pick someone to blame, so he picked his mom and blamed everything on her so it kind of make me smile whenever I hear it.

Another slogan I like is “When the world is filled with evil, transform all mishaps into the path of bodhi.”
