On December 8, join people from all around the world to demand our leaders take urgent action now to prevent catastrophic global warming. The rally will coincide with the halfway point of the historic United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which takes place December 3 - 14, 2007 in Bali, Indonesia. If enough people take to the streets, it will put tremendous pressure on the world's leaders to take action.

11am Special UofT Student Feeder March:
Show the world that UofT students are ready to play a leading role in demanding a better future for our planet. Assemble 11am in front of Sidney Smith Hall, 100 St. George Street, with your banners, noise-makers, anything you can bring! We will then march and join the main rally at Dundas Square.

12pm Rally at Dundas Square:
Recognizing that Canada is one of the worst per capita polluters in the world, we call upon our governemnt to enact binding legislation which will halt and reverse our emission of greenhouse gases. As individuals we commit ourselves to conserving energy and reducing waste, but we need a framework wherein we have access to renewable resources, environmentally friendly products, and a system where polluters pay the price for the damage they do to the environment.

1:30pm March for Clean Energy:
A scientific study has been conducted showing that it is possible to meet Ontario's energy needs through wind and solar power, so why is the Ontario government planning to invest billions of dollars in nuclear power plants which will create radioactive waste that will last for 8000 generations. Join us as we march through the streets of Toronto to take the message that 'renewable is doable' to Queen's Park.

2pm Eco-Fair (Debates Room, Hart House, University of Toronto)
Warm up and enjoy complimentary hot meal featuring local food prepared by campus group Hot Yam, while learning about what's happening in the world of environmental activism. Visit and connect with booths from various activist NGOs, volunteer groups, and green businesses.

Climate Change is real and is taking it's toll. In Canada and around the world we've experienced record-breaking heat, increased frequency of droughts and floods, as well as melting permafrost in the Arctic. Globally, the impacts are catastrophic. According to the World Health Organization, earth's warming climate is contributing to more than 150,000 deaths each year, and that number will double by 2030. Millions of people will be displaced by rising ocean levels, millions more will lose access to water and up to 37% of all wildlife will be endangered. Canada will not be immune to the impact.

Despite the gloomy picture, it is not too late. The technology exists to dramatically reverse our emission of greenhouse gases (primarily carbon dioxide) which are driving climate change. We need the political will to take control of our own destiny and not let it be decided for us. The Kyoto Protocol is considered a baby step toward necessary emission reduction. Canada is one of the three largest emitters in the world, and has an international obligation to ensure that once that step is taken, we move beyond it and lower our emissions further.

On December 8, stand up and demand that our government take real action to combat the climate crisis

http://www.torontoclimatecampaign.org/

What is Stand Up and Speak Out?

STAND UP and SPEAK OUT is a worldwide call to take action against poverty and inequality and for the Millennium Development Goals. On October 16th and 17th, be a part of this growing movement of people who refuse to stay silent or seated in the face of poverty. Help us break the world record so we can break the record of broken promises.

There are a number of events going on in Toronto, one of which you might want to participate in. I've never done any "active" activism (only armchair activism - letters, emails, blogs) and I've certainly never taken part in a Guiness World Record event.

The website is below:

http://www.standagainstpoverty.org/

Or you can go right to the part where you can find events happening near you:

http://www.standagainstpoverty.org/en/events and then pick Canada, and it should show all the events in Canada.

Or you can set up an event yourself. The website tells you how to do it.

If there is something handy to where you are or if you are an event-planning kind of person and have the time to do something in your neighbourhood, please consider getting involved in this event.

The gap between rich and poor in Canada is wider than it has ever been; there are more children living in poverty in Canada; and it goes without saying that there are many, many very poor children and families living around the world.

You can read more about this and other issues affecting Canada in my Zaadz blog of August 4, 2007 .

There is a downside as well as an upside to the Canadian dollar being at par (or even a bit above today). Canada depends on US Tourism to a large degree, and many Americans are not coming here now because of it. Also, it has severely affected some of our industries, particularly the lumber industry. Many Canadians are also choosing to spend that buck in the US now, taking away jobs and sales from Canadian workers and companies.

I, too, have relatives and friends in the US. I've even considered moving there myself. My major concern is for my grandsons (currently aged 17 and 12), in the event that Harper thinks it necessary to start conscription in order to keep enough people in the Armed Forces in order to try to assist the rest of the world. We are in places we have no business being - and while I whole-heartedly support our troops, I don't for a minute support the idea of them in any of the middle-eastern countries where the Bushites have (or will try to) created wars to bolster their share of the world oil market. That's all it is, really - greed, and more greed!

With the potential of a Canadian Election looming, although it appears the Liberals are going to try to sit out the vote, so as not to bring the government down on the Throne Speech coming up in October, we need to really weigh whether or not we want any more time with Mr. Harper at the helm, even if Mr. Dion has appearances of being a weak duckling who would flounder as a leader. I still believe that there is far more "leadership potential" in the Liberal party in Canada, than in the Conservative party. While I probably wouldn't vote for them, I'd prefer to see the Liberals in power with a minority government, not a majority. Should it come to that though, I wonder which side Mr. Duceppe will throw his Bloc parties weight behind, given that he's the one determined to oust the Conservatives. He's never been too big-time on supporting the Liberals in the past.

Ah, what complicated times we live in, eh!

Cheers!

Gem

I do not think it is about the U.S. wanting to disappear Canada, though it does peeve them when we won't follow them blindly.

Harper does want to be associated with Bush, which is very bad where the environment is concerned, among other things. However, the majority of Canadians would have voted for Al Gore, not for Bush, so it may not be particularly wise of Harper to be chums with Bush.

The U.S. does need to completely overhaul its long, long, long election process and cap amounts of money going into campaign coffers and amount from any one corporation going in. I also think lobbyists should not be permitted to have offices so close to the offices of the politicians. I also think American votes (and their email/blogging pals) need to email/fax, blog about American politicians who leave their ethics at the door. The best target would be the Democrats, who often get money from the same corporations Republicans are getting money from. Just too easy for everything to be corrupted.

I think a little shining of lights on things happening in the dark would be a great thing.

My parents, brother, sisters and two nephews and nieces live in the U.S. (different parts), so I can't just rail against Bush without trying to do something about it. I go to thepetitionssite and signing petitions. I lived there from 10 to 19, so more of my important years of schooling were in the U.S. and I have friends who live there as well. All of these people deserve a better government than what they have now.

I am very worried that the Bush administration will talk Americans into a war against Iran (more oil, what else) before his term of office is over. It is like knowing a train wreck will happen but not being able to stop it. I did send an email to Harper to let him know what the Canadian government should do about it .

P.S. Wasn't it a hoot when the dollar went up to and over par?

Dryad
(more recently Inukshuk)

I read the article. I cannot tell you how frightening this sounds to me.

So now we're going to allow vigilante's and "homeland defence soldiers" and "air-marshalls" to bring guns into Canada. I guess if we get enough of them here, about the only people that will be able to protect themselves from being shot "in the name of national defence" (or at least get a whack at firing back!) are the armed hoodlums wandering around certain parts of the GTA.

Our freedom as a nation has been sold down the river by a bunch of oil-baron hoodlums who will plunder and pillage us, and given the chance, annex us into their country by force, since we don't seem to be too inclined to go any more willingly than some other third world countries they've done the same thing to.

I tried to warn people that Mr. Harper could not be trusted with this country - that he was a pansy for the Bushites - no one would listen - and like the old song goes "wonder if they're listening now!".

A very disturbed

Gem

My apologies to anyone who doesn't like rants, but this one is necessary. I'm hoping that people from the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga in particular, will read this.

Our landlord, CAP REIT, has refused to enforce a "No Barbequing" clause in their lease for the last year at this location. This means that on a very hot day, without central air-conditioning, and if you are unable to put one in now because you cannot afford the $100.00 per air-conditioner for the summer that they informed us we'd have to pay, when your neighbours decide to smoke you out with their BBQ'ing, and/or they stand outside on their balconies and smoke like idiot chimney's, you're ONLY choices are to suffocate with windows and balcony closed, or leave them open and suffocate from the smoke! My apartment right at this minute (at 8 PM in the evening, on a somewhat damp and COOL day) is registering 32 Celcius in the coolest place in it. Think what it will be when summer actually hits!

So, if you or someone you know are planning to move soon, do yourself or them a HUGE favour and DON'T rent from CAP REIT. They are the worst landlords I've ever had, and I've lived in at least 17 or 18 apartments and flats in the last 25 years in this area.

In case anyone thinks I'm just blowing smoke, I'm planning on putting some of the 50 pictures my daughter and I took this weekend of the run down conditions of this building on my web-site. My daughter will be doing the same, just to make sure enough people get to see this. I'll add the URL to this thread, once the pic's are up, so everyone on the internet can see what it's like in this building. Believe me, if I could afford to move out today, they wouldn't see me for dust. My daughter lives in the building, as well, and that's one of the reasons I moved here, the other being that it was close to my son's place, a few blocks away. I guess we'll both be looking for someplace else sooner than we'd planned, because living here has become intolerable.

Cheers!
Gem :-)

      Hi:

I just joined Zaadz last week, and was surfing around to find local people. I'm in Mississauga. I would like to see the type of community Brian is attempting to create here with zaadz to include people from Canada, and particularly from our major centres.

So I decided to join the Toronto.zaadz group, and I hope that I will be able to contribute something, as well as make more contacts for my own business and lifestyle (they sort of meld together - kind of hard to determine where one leaves off and the other starts).

By way of introduction, I am a deep trance psychic channel, clairvoyant, hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner (in no particular order). I have two web-sites (self-built and maintained), and a flair for communication. I also do public speaking, lectures and group meditation classes (not currently, for the latter, though). I also compose music and I am looking forward to releasing my first CD shortly.

I haven't really been able to determine from the Toronto list how many there are of us. I'd like to suggest we actively work at creating a strong community here, because this concept (that Brian talked about in his initial email to me) is something powerful. I think it would be great for like-minded people in the GTA to build this part of the online community into a wonderful, useful network for us all.

OK........ probably went a bit over-board - but I'm excited about this.

Cheers!
Gem(star) :-)

PS: My one special project right now is being on the legislative committee for the National Guild of Hypnotists. We (hypnotists and hypnotherapists) in Ontario are currently fighting for our livelihoods - should the currently proposed Bill 171 be passed, particularly Schedule Q - setting up a new College of Psychology, and generally reforming Ontario health care (it's currently in late "committee" stage after having passed 1st and 2nd readings), approximately 2000 Ontario businesses will be killed with a stroke of a pen. Anyone wishing to communicate how terrible that would be to their MPP, definitely would be doing all of us a big favour. It is scheduled for clause-by-clause review/revamp starting May 7th, so there is still time to get the word out to the public about this travesty of a bill the Liberals are attempting to push through (because they haven't done anything else since they took power two years ago).

So spring has sprung my fellow Tdot Zaadzsters!

Although there might still be snow in our future, it is a time for new beginnings..

Is anyone still looking to spark some zaadz zaangha action? Suggestions for a place to meet and network?

Is anyone working on any special events or projects?

peace and light,

3gem
