ah valerie, you may live to regret my invite!lol but sure, the buddha gummy bear is the cutest one of all….(sorry dov)………

okay, let's be honest here: hasn't the buddha become as much of an idol as jesus?

If one prostrates before a representation of the Buddha, one bows before a representation of the wisdom of the Buddha - the awakened mind, not the mere mortal who once upon a time realized it and expounded its Dharma (or Truth).

If an individual were to truly revere the representation unto itself, they would have sorely missed the point.

Hey!

Buddha Gummy Bears be damned, I am Da Bear around these woods! And I am Mighty Cute - in fact I am Cute Incarnate!

And I second, andrew's question: As far as I have understood, Buddhism doesn't revere a g-d or G-d, but is a path of right action and right thought - so how does that fit with the reverence for Buddha himself and the seeming worship of representations of Buddha.

I get what Tharlam says If an individual were to truly revere the representation unto itself, they would have sorely missed the point.”

The 'problem' I see is the way those representations are treated, which has very little difference from f.i the veneration of Yeshu ben MIriam or Miriam, his mother in the Catholic Church.

Belonging to a Path that is extremly adamantly negative in regards to any physical reality in regards to the Divine or the veneration of physical objects (including humans) as some sort of carrier of the Divine, I find this puzzling.

Shalom,
Dov

yeah, well, remind me to kick the crap out of those 2 guys if i ever meet them on the road!lol
but seriously, i'd be surprised if jesus or buddha wanted the veneration that has been shown to them; nevertheless, under the laws of logic there either is or isn't a god. A can't be A and not A., which is why i think there is massive amounts of confusion when it comes to metaphysics and ontology.

i did spent far too may hours in banyen books pouring over eastern literature and came away feeling that the east produced some of the most sublime spiritual ideas ever juxtaposed to some of the most superstitious spiritual nonsense i've ever read. differentiating between the two seems to be a major challenge for us………

i guessin the  here and now regardless of ultimate realities there is plenty of room for common ground amongst the traditions, although the only way i see that common ground being shared is to talk in spiritual hypothesis….

hey dov., could you clarify your last paragraph for me? As  911 proved airplanes make great weapons and the vancouver airport authority has once again decided to traumatize the neighborhood by doing work on the ocean runway from 9pm to 7am 7 days a week, thereby forcing the use of the north runway during those hours which means the planes now fly right over my head! No sleep and we all no that sleep deprivation has long been used as a weapon of torture. by the way, if 911 was a conspiracy the airport authorities would of have to have been in on it….but i digress, the long and short of it is i can't quite make out what your saying there……..

andrew - in the instance that you are not pulling my leg or trying to steal my Gummy Bears, this paragraph:

Belonging to a Path that is extremly adamantly negative in regards to any physical reality in regards to the Divine or the veneration of physical objects (including humans) as some sort of carrier of the Divine, I find this puzzling”

means the following:

Since I belong to a spiritual Path that tells me that G-d has no physical manifestation whatsoever and that any veneration of physical objects either as G-d or representations of G-d, including human in form, is forbidden, I find the veneration and devotion given to statues of Buddha puzzling/incomprehensible.

hi tely! lmao…….um, as dov can testify to i am a bit of an irreverent knucklehead! i've come to call all religion gummy bears notwithstanding wilber's conveyor belt and fowler's stages of faith ideas.

hey, by the way, there is some very interesting scientific research being done on astrology and the energy patterns that the planets and constellations seem to 'create'….it's certainly not proving astrology but it is taking the domain beyond pre-rationalism………

Tely, :) (((hug)))

Don't mind me and andrew and any Gummy Bears that might be flying around - andrew frequently tosses them about and he and I are in the habit of tossing Gummy Bears at each other whenever we meet. It's a form of complex greeting. andrew claims that there are no Gummy Bears, I claim that there are, and the only reason andrew can claim that there are no Gummy Bears is because he eats them when they hit him… :D

peaceful hugs,
Dov

PS: as far as I know there is no such thing as a Buddha Gummy Bear, I think andrew made that up - perhaps because he was hungry :D

OK, gentlement (Dov and Andrew), I've got a great new business idea – Buddha Gummy Bears!  You get first dibs at it, since it was your idea, albeit in jest.  I'm already salivating and have my credit card in hand.  And I'm thinking about what a great gag gift it would be, so in my imagination, I'm also ordering lots of little packets of Buddha Gummy Bears for my friends.  Is there an entrepreneur amongst you?

BTW, should we start a new Gummy Bear Buddha thread, since we're diverging here from the initial “Welcome”?

Well, Tely, I found it in my Paintshop Pro 8 - just sitting there waiting for me last night :D - it attacked me mentally when I was watching Underworld with my wife, and insisted of being transfered from my PSP 8 to this thread…I had trouble though - I kept wanting to eat it…

and I second the start of a Gummy Bear Thread - perhaps our Peaceful and Contemplating Leader would not mind such a thread…:D

On the subject of veneration and Buddha Shakyamuni:

What is venerated is the Buddha, not the Shakyamuni.

On an ultimate level, 'tis the awakened mind that is venerated, not the man who realised it.

Of course, there is a certain degree on the realative scale of “thanks - I would not have realised that quite as quickly if you hadn't pointed it out” but there is certainly not, at least not for me and the traditions and practices I am involved with, any Yeshu ben Miram style “by bowing low to this representation and the man it represents, he personally is going to benefit me in such and such a way…”

yeah, i'd like to thank tharlam too for being good natured about my irreverence…….

yeah dov, that's what i thought you meant and i appreciate the clarification.

well tely, it sounds like the buddha gummy bear would have to be orange although tony robbins may take offense that he's not getting that color. the jesus bear would have to be amber, and of course the tall skinny wilber bear would be turquoise…………

hmmm, now which spiritual gummy bear would be black?lol
