The Simple Bicycle

Hi people,

I'm new here. My name is Shay, and I am part of a collective working to encourage people to integrate a bit of bicycling into their lives for environmental and health, etc… reasons.  Bicycling is a great way to power-down and simply both your transportation needs and your life in general.

We are happy to answer any questions that people might have if they are considering the bicycle as an alternative mode of transportation.

you can visit us at BikeNow.zaadz.com

Peace and Bikes,

Shay

Hi Shay.  That's some great work you are doing.

I can give testimony to that.  I began using my bike as my main form of transportation almost a month ago.  It has changed my life.  I feel alot better, i'm in better shape, i have less guilt from not driving a vehicle around very much at all, too many benefits to mention.

And, actually, it was through this vs pod that i received the encouragement to do that.

So thanks Shay and all you bicycle enthusiasts.

Shay,

Is this exclusively for the L.A. area? I am wondering if there is a “branch” on the U.S. east coast anywhere as well. I biked a lot when I lived on the west coast, but our here the roads are not as accomodating and it would be great to have maps of the bike routes.

Also, can you suggest resources to help us take requests to city planning meetings, etc.?

Thanks (You should start a pod about this!)

Wonderful topic!

One of our new appreciations in life is being able to walk where we want to go since moving to a small town vs. rural suburbia kind of place.

But the second best thing is being able to cycle to work, stores and events even in the next town over or a couple over.

Nice thing here is http://www.avta-trails.org/

I think the rails-to-trails idea started as a recreational one but a local radio dj began a small movement of those tired of gas prices.  They all now use the trail riding between the two towns here to commute to work.

We weren't sure how we'd take to cycling so we didn't run out and buy expensive bikes.  Shopped at the Salvation Army thrift store for a couple, got started.  They are still working fine.  But we are liking cycling more.  I think to make it more of a family activity and to expand the # of things we cycle TO we are going to look into buying a trailer for my bike to tote our son along instead of limiting his rides to what he can pedal.
