I'm New Here

starpeople said Aug 8, 4:08 AM:

I'm new here and I thought I'd just drop in and say hello.  I'm just trying to find my way around, not sure how everything works.  If you want to see where my head is at, I started a new blog last week, I usually do guitar stuff but after years of Dharma I thought it was time to do Dharma

It's call The Star People, it's about Dharma and Inner Space

The Star People address is at The Star People

That's me below, hopefully this all works.

Any hints are great.

Welcome! I wrote you a letter, but think I'll also post some of it here in case any other Newbies run across it and could benefit.

As far as getting around here, the How Tos and FAQs Group is primary, and there is an entire orientation program if you dig deeply enough into Gaia Networking Group's New to Gaia room.

Basically, explore all the columns on the left side of the site screens, (Gaia, Me, etc.) and all the items within each column, and presto you will be oriented.  Oh, and a few links upper right of all screens.

I am very curious about what specific challenges you find in getting around Gaia's website.

Rev OM

i am very appreciative of your help, support and advice

Re:  challenges.
It's a rabbit hole and not logical.

I find I constantly have to click through groups and then categories within groups to try and see what responses there are.  It's easy to miss things, and I don't wish to offend anyone.  It takes 15 seconds + to go from one screen to the next, when you try and backtrack, it's a lot of clicking and waiting. There are so many layers here, it is a much more powerful platform than the standard ning social network software, and I can see why it's all required but it is frustrating.

Yes there are notifications for some things but as far as I can see, there are no notifications for anything that I comment.  I could grab all the feeds and put them into igoogle or another interface.  But that's a fraction time consuming itself. But that would probably resolve it, I'm not quite sure.

I trying to think it through so I can agregate whatever I want in a simple fashion.  If I pulled in every feed from every comment, post and discussion, it could be a bit clunky.

Thinking thinking out loud.

Rev OM

I've just rethought all this, and I realise if I click on my activity feed it will point to all my pevious activity, this seems to solve many of my frustrations

That's great, Tony. Please feel free to ask any of us for help if you're having trouble navigating groups.

What I find easiest, since I belong in so many groups is just to click on the overall Discussions link and see what responses there have been in all the groups since my last post. It works if you have time to drop in twice a day, at least, and don't mind scrolling through a couple of hundred beginnings of responses :)

Cheers,

Nicole

Yes, Tony, “My activity” is a godsend to get back to what I've done that I want to track. I suspect even more relevant for you is to discover the standard way we track responses to what we have posted. Under Settings under Group Discussions, at the top is a separate item called something like “Posts to Threads I have posted to.” That aggregates on a daily basis every post made to every thread you posted to, in every group you have posted in, at any time in the past.

Also if you visit a group you've posted to, you can aggregate your own posts there easily  if you always sign your posts with your name or some phrase that's always the same and unique to you. Do a Search This Group for your name or phrase, and presto!

Blessings,
OM

Not only that, it duplicates My Activity list, but with full texts of your own group posts. It's the most valuable function on Gaia, to me.

The all-time favorite Gaia discussion group is “What is Enlightenment?” This Group is for people who wish to engage in meaningful spiritual inquiry about the topic of enlightenment. What is enlightenment? What does it mean to be enlightened, and what comes next? What has your experience been with developing your own awareness, with those who claim to be enlightened, or those that promise enlightenment?

The above questions go with my new discussion group I’ve named “The Right to Peaceful Coexistence.” What is enlightenment about? The moment I opened my new group, just a few days ago, the question was asked: “Where do our rights come from and why are we entitled to them?” That’s a very good question. Why is might makes right not right? I answered the best I could. The questioner must have been satisfied. He hasn’t been back.

How can one be enlightened if he is forced to live under an oppressive government, if he doesn’t have the right to peaceful coexistence? I'm a World War II veteran.  Thousands of us are dying every day. My time to go will come soon enough. Everything I've learned will go with me.

My experience with developing my own awareness comes from within, however, not always. After I ended in a snake pit, I started looking within. When everything should have gone wrong, everything started going right. And now, if life could be any better, I don’t know how.

Hey, WW II veteran you must be someone oldern' me, which there aren't too many of !!

How about a link to your group? I have a few things to say about where rights come from, and how one could be enlightened while living under an oppressive government.

If you don't want everything you learned to go with you, then dig in! Start carrying around a digital recorder, and talk talk talk. Get interviewed and record it. Make videos of your wisdom. Write, write, write. Post all over Gaia.

I am glad to hear your life is so very good! Wishing you much more of that!

Blessings, OM Bastet
