What is unconsciousness?

Victor said Dec 6, 2006, 1:53 PM:

HI all,

I didn't exactly know where to post this question but I figure this group might be the wisest choice.  For anyone whos read Eckhart Tolles book the power of now he talks alot about unconsciousness and how any negativity within means that youve been drawn into unconsciousness.  Gurdjieff taught that most people are completely on autopilot as their predominant state.  Can anyone give me a solid definition of human unconsciousness?

Eckhart Tolle's new book, A New Earth, goes into this subject in more detail.   I highly recommend reading it.

Basically, the unconscious mind is the storehouse for false beliefs and repressed, unresolved, uncomfortable feelings from the past (these two are often intertwined), both of which have a profoundly negative affect on our lives and block enlightenment.

Yes basicly, Unconsciousness is living on assumptions of the past. Since most people tend to remember negative experiences easilier it tends to become negative meore frequent. But that isn't always the case. Overjoyment can blind you just as much.
