Celebrations in my country

Meenakshi said Jun 20, 2:04 PM:

Every country has celebrations that transcend cultural and regional differences. Let us describe the celebrations of our country, specially from a personal viewpoint. Read what each other write, interact, ask and answer questions. Can you also link to historical information about it? Post images? Or links to your blog if you are celebrating there.

July 1st is Canada Day!

Canada Day is an opportunity to gather in our communities, from coast to coast to coast, and to proudly celebrate all we have in common. It is an opportunity to celebrate our achievements, which were born in the audacious vision and shared values of our ancestors, and which are voiced in nearly all of the languages of the world through the contribution of new Canadians

.Canada Day is a time to celebrate the heritage passed down to us through the works of our authors, poets, artists and performers. It is a time to rejoice in the discoveries of our scientific researchers, in the success of our entrepreneurs, and to commemorate our history - a history in which each new chapter reveals itself to be more touching, more fascinating than the last.As we look ahead, we have every reason to face the future with confidence and enthusiasm.

Meenakshi this thread is an interesting one indeed! I'm wondering if South Africa has celebrations unique to it which fit into this subject. Do you think you could elaborate a little or give and example

love

I think it's about a celebration like NIcole described. It isn't in itself religious or spiritual; but because it connects people in shared objectives - even if it is fun - it is an important aspect of world heritage.

Thank you for the links, Nicole. It helps me to get to know your country better.
I'm thinking that a lot of the national days are to do with freedom from a colonial power [usually England!!!] - right?

thank you Nicole and Meenakshi. I am wondering if Youth Day celebrated in SA would fall into this category

I hear what you say about England having been the great colonizer, Meenakshi - here in Africa England has also played a role and countries such as Portugal and France were also colonizers. I am wondering if we search history if we'll find many countries which have not been colonizers at some point. A country is colonized then made into 'a new country' by a colonizer. Then at some point the new country liberates itself of the colonizer and becomes autonomous. I hope time will come when this process of domination will end but I guess this may be a subject for another thread
