shoulders and lower back

Katrina said Nov 22, 2006, 1:59 PM:

i am just now completing my first trimester of which consisted of tons of eating and little to no yoga or exercise. i was way too sick to do either of them. so, i am thrilled to be moving into the next phase of this glorious journey!
I was very used to exercising and practicing yoga regularly, and i've noticed huge differences in my body now that it's been missing for a while.
my shoulders and my lower back are the two target areas that are complaining most right now. just doing the simple cat/cow movements on all fours helps to get the energies moving more freely. slow neck rolls while interlacing my fingers behind my back and pulling them down help release my shoulder aches.
can anyone relate? and what are some more yoga stretching ideas??

The growth of breast tissue and enlarging uterus explain much about the shoulder and back pain. Also, do you Carry your two year old????? There are so many things you can do to remedy the discomfort, I will get back to you on this!!!!!! (I need to put some things together for you)

i am also just finishing first trimester. so tired. i trust i'm coming out of it slowly. the nausea is gone at least. so yes, my practice has become practically nonexistent, though i teach 11 classes a week and move some while teaching, but i also spend a lot of time moving around the room and assisting. by the time i'm done with “work” i'm lucky if i have the stamina to walk around the block a few times. i do try to do very simple mindful movements, just to keep the energy flowing. simple shoulder stretches, hip circles, simple warriors and lunges, uttanasana, dog, prasarita padottanasana, tree, and lots of restoratives!

do you have bolsters and blankets you can play with? restoratives are so yummy!

you know i don't have bolsters and blankets…i've done restorative poses very little…but, when i have they are quite delicious! i am going to start checking out some prenatal yoga classes here in town and i'll share what i learn from them. i'm glad to hear you're not sick anymore! and eleven classes a week is quite a handful…take care of your self and sweet baby and i'll write soon!

I've just realized that some of these posts are a year old, but what the heck maybe someone is reading.  my baby is 16 mo and i taught about 15 classes a week up until having her.  my pregnancy totally jump started my calm quiet gentle practice into a high energy endurance session.  i think it is different for everyone really and you need do tune itno what is right for your body at the time.  the vigorous movement plus eating every hour helped my nausea.  since having my baby i couldn't stretch for over a year!!  it sorta feels good now, but having a hard time getting back into it. i plan to start teaching again in a couple months…any suggestions. i hope to only to gentle intro classes.

oh yeah, my favorite thing while i was prego was shiatsu in my hips.  if you can get your partner to use his elbow to apply pressure beside your sacrum- it'll just sink in.  it helps sciatica and shoulder pain.  a lot of that shoulder pain starts in the hips.
