LAURIE:  I would say 8.  It’s equally as important as my morning cuppa tea which is very important.  I intentionally wake up early so that I can weave the daily Questions and Reflections into my meditation time.

Sunshine - You asked, “If you were a bird, which one would you be?” 

I would be a Kestrel; the smallest bird in the falcon family.  Few birds can actually 'hover' for any length of time.  The Kestrel can.  Through observation they have much to teach the spiritual seeker.

I'm sorry that I didn't see your post earlier.  Thank you for stopping by.  It's 6:18pm where I am and the birds I'm looking at right now are mostly red-winged blackbirds (both male and female).  Earlier we had a pair of cardinals (gorgeous).  This morning there was a full-on variety.  The later it gets in the day, the fewer we have (we have a nearby owl and the smaller birds roll up the sidewalk and go home pretty early).  At about 4:20am we have the widest variety.

it's ok! red winged blackbirds? is the red on the tips of the wings? i have seen blackbirds with red on them, but it isn't on the tips, but i think its on the wings. they like to hang around this swamp..marsh..area.  we have robins, chickadees, canaries, blue jays, hawks, eagles, owls sparrows, lots of little song birds. i have never seen an owl, and have only once seen a cardinal (many years ago when i was still little!), but i did see a pair of hawks sitting in a tree!

what other animals do you have? cougars? wolves? bears? we have all three. moose? never seen one, but they are here. i haven't seen a cougar or wolf too..bears are common, but i haven't seen one either! i'm not in the right place at the right time..

Red winged blackbirds have red and yellow on their 'shoulders' (somewhat like epilettes on a military uniform).  Because our back fence backs up to a protected natural wetland we have fox, deer, racoon, skunk, possum and loads of ducks and Canadian geese.

It makes for tremendous 'viewing pleasure' for our three dogs (through a six-foot chainlink fence) …

once when i was little, there was this fox that came up to us and it was so sweet! it was nearly tame! we fed it meat. it went into our little snow fort too! he was a cutiepants :D he sparked my love of foxes! we have skunk too..unfortuantely the dog always gets sprayed. we have deer, ducks, geese, herons, snappers, painters, loads of fish…tasty, tasty fish!!

Oh, what a delight.  I will be checking in regularly, to read as this thread unfolds.

I haven't known Laurie long as my Gaian days go; but already she is a trusted confidant and friend.  She is ever there with encouragement and asks nothing in return.  She is like the sun coming up each day.  

Gaia is a better place and I am a better person, simply because Laurie exists.

Sunshine - So far this morning we've had red wing blackbirds, bluejays, gold finches, mourning doves, woodpeckers, black-capped chickadees, sparrows, house wrens and grackles.

My all-time favorite tea is Yogi Bedtime Tea, but I don't have that in the morning.  In the morning, I enjoy Lady Grey by Twinnings.  It has a very mild citrus taste to it.

Jeff - it has been my pleasure to visit your website and indulge my eyes with your beautiful photography.  I feel gifted every time I take a peek.

Laurie,  No wonder you feel like a kindred spirit to me.  I am absolutely commented to Twinnings Teas - I wake up with Herbal Revive (Lemon & Chinese Ginger to which I add 2 tbsps of pure Lemon Juice), at bedtime their Camomile.  During the day, I alternate between Green Tea and other Twinnings caffeinated kinds like Irish Breakfast, English Breakfast, English Afternoon, Earl Grey and sometimes Darjeeling.  Can you tell I like my tea mostly strong ?

Each morning, I sit on my back porch for 10 mins of wake up contemplation - How did I grow yesterday?  What did I give yesterday?  What do I have to celebrate about yesterday?  This is the reflection part, so I can focus and quiet my mind.

Then, I align with the states of BEing - Love and Happiness.  I breath in Happiness and let go, of anything that isn't, with the out breath.

I watch the Hummingbirds (we have 2 or 3 dozen) come to my feeder, watch the little Wren that nests on our back porch, listen to and watch any other birds and squirrels, etc about.  

Yesterday afternoon as I sat eating my lunch there, an Owl swooped out of the trees along the creek to my East and flew low right across the space in front of me and on towards the southwest.  I've never seen that before and realized that it was not nearly dark yet and therefore, a bit unusual.  I had to rush and look up Owl Totem.  The link I found fit where I am today perfectly - Owl Medicine.

Imagine! You work on a team where everyone works together beautifully. You trust each other, complement each other’s strengths, compensate for each other’s weaknesses, and aim for goals that have real meaning for all. No one has all the answers but everyone is willing to learn together. Each shares a vision of greatness, and collectively people consistently can accomplish what many think impossible.

Some know what it’s like to be part of such a team, but for most, the experience is the exception, not the rule. And it’s unlikely to change until we recognize that few great teams begin great. They develop their collective capacity; they learn.

Kathy - The verbal picture you painted of the workplace where everyone works together beautifully … oh the satisfaction, the fulfillment that would be derived from such an uplifting environment!

You are correct in that for the most part, that setting is the exception rather than the rule – office or home.  It is something to be developed, learned and then taught.  Not taught with words alone.  All too often that is simply lip service.  But taught through modeling – being a living example – being a living meditation.

The quote that you shared of Peter Senge, The 5th Discipline, is excellent!  Thank you.  Inter-dependence.  Inter-connection.  We are, indeed, one.

Some of you who know me, know that I struggled with the daily questions on July 3, 4 and 5, especially as it related to independence and interdependence.   After stirring it around in my “brain-pot” for a bit, I came to personal resolution.  Here is a LINK to what I posted last evening.

You mentioned that you are interested in learning more about my perspective regarding simplicity and approaches to holistic health, wellbeing, building community and our environments.  Much of what I am about to share comes from my book (not published yet - I am in the midst of that process), “Drop the Bags and No One Will Get Hurt: A Practical Guide to Abundant Living.”

Simplicity
To my way of thinking simplicity is efficiency.  It is a clearing of clutter, mental or otherwise.

Holistic
Holistic is a mindset and approach that emphasizes the importance of the whole – body, mind and spirit - and the interdependence of its parts.  A truly holistic mindset and approach applies this on an individual and collective basis.

Wellbeing – or Wellness
It is my perspective that wellness is the quality of being healthy in body, mind and spirit; many times the result of deliberate effort.  It is an approach to health that emphasizes prevention of illness as opposed to focusing on the treatment of disease.

Like a diamond, each of us has multiple facets – physical, occupational, social, emotional, environmental, intellectual and spiritual.  Working in conjunction with each other they provide us with the ability to live life to the fullest and to maximize personal potential.

Wellness involves continually learning and making changes to enhance our state of wellbeing.  When all of these facets are healthy and working in harmony with each other we experience optimal wellness.

Building Community
I will direct your attention back to the LINK that I provided earlier.  Building community is very much a ripple effect that starts in our very own home … extends outward … and then in boomerang style, comes right back again.  I fully embrace the belief that community is not local, but global.

Environment
Each of us has a personal energy signature that we are responsible for.  Everything in our environment contributes to this signature–people, plants, animals, appliances, color, sound, electronics, food, etc.  When each of us assesses these energetic contributions we need to ask ourselves if they are, indeed, what we want to receive?  Are they making a healthy contribution to our energy systems?  If not, then what do we intend to do about it?  What are the positive, realistic actions steps involved? 

On my 50th birthday in 2007 I took a brief hermitage to discover the most important thing that I had learned to date.  It was, and remains this: 

Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.”

Tips
Bottom line on top … when you break it down to parade rest; when you remove the clutter; what is left?  Your essence.  If you think of your essence as a car, who is driving – ego or Spirit?  The best tip I know for growing a holistic mindset and approach is to let Spirit have the wheel (and do not be a backseat driver) …

I can't tell you how wonderful, for me, your presence on Gaia has been; I remember when you first joined being startled to discover that you were a newcomer, just because of how graciously and naturally your posts seemed to flow within the community. I'm so glad KES has chosen to highlight you here, and so glad you found us.

I've been nodding to everything that friends here have written, Laurie, because truly you are someone that I feel so happy to know. You  have great gifts and yet are so open and warm, that it's like meeting a friend whom I've known for ever.  So approachable. 

I loved reading what you wrote, Kala, about Laurie being your first friend her, because it's true - Laurie has shared with us how she reaches out to newcomers to Gaia.  I'm glad to see you show us how important that is.

Laurie, every time you share on your status that you're having your cuppa, I feel that I've had a cup of tea with you as well! I love the way you use your status to share what you're doing; going to see clients or reading or dancing! From you I've learned how the status can be used to tweet! You really are busy, and yet you don't neglect us at Gaia.

It's simple - Gaia is a priority.  It's an area where the ripple effect can really be seen.  It's a place where, by intent, I can effect the highest and best good.

Why, I don't mind if I do  :) Make mine a nice cup of Queen Ann's Lace tea, please. My absolute favorite, even if the neighbors do look at me funny for picking it out of my lawn!

I checked out the website listed above. I love your list of services, and descriptions of several different things. I especially found the couple energy balancing very intriguing! Not many energy workers “go there” in their practice. Yet, sometimes a little balance between the people in a committed couple is what is needed most. I also enjoyed the energy work tailored to the pregnant mother. A great menu of services indeed. Great job on all the hard work you have obviously put into growing HolEssence!

Mercale - If you've ever walked across the Highlands of Scotland you know that the most glorious Queen Anne's Lace on the planet resides there.  Like a beautiful blanket, it covers the countryside.  But I just learned something new from you.  I was not aware that you can use it to make tea.  Thank you for that!

Couples Energy Work is delightful because I never allow myself to become engaged in the role of 'referee.'  It is orchestrated in a manner where everyone stays on the High Road and the positive aspects of each person are magnified. 

Bodywork for the Childbearing Year is quite possibly my favorite.  Helping to nurture and and then usher a new soul into the world has never left me short of awe-filled.

I'm in the midst of the publishing process right now.  The full manuscript
(309 pages, 53,365 words - not that I'm counting) is with a publisher as we speak.  We are not under contract.  They have 12-weeks to let me know if this will fly with them.  My hope is that it will soar!

Rita - Thank you so much for stopping by.  And thank you for weaving in my husband, LEN.  In March we will celebrate 30 years of marriage.  

Our healing studio is located in historic dowtown Crystal Lake, Illinois.   Len is responsible for the product (store) side of things and everything that is technical (except for the website), while I am responsible for the service side of things.

You asked, “If we are acknowledging our 'boomerang-style' interconnectedness in our holistic living - what might we notice?

You will notice an increase in abundance.  Let me define what I mean when I use that term:

It is my perspective that abundance is fulfillment.  It is inner wealth.  To my way of thinking, abundance is not to be confused with prosperity.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with prosperity.  However, the things that you will notice when you engage in the conscious practice of living in/with boomerang-style interconnectedness all fall under the category of abundance.  Abundance is something that brings a return value to the heart.  It benefits your inner self–body, mind and spirit.  Abundance is generally intangible (i.e., health, loving relationships, joy, peace of mind, etc.). 

For the purpose of comparing and contrasting, please let me define what I mean when I use the term Prosperity:

It is my perspective that prosperity is something that brings a return value to the wallet and/or bank account.  It is on the outside; it is material wealth.  Prosperity is something which is tangible: you can touch it, hold it, drive it, live in it, wear it, swim in it, take it to the bank or deposit it.  You could even sell prosperity if you had to.

Note:  That's not to say that prosperity won't follow right along when by intent you engage in a conscious practice of living in/with boomerang-style interconnectedness.  But the first and foremost things you will notice will be heart-based in nature.

On a trivial point, but since you are a green tea afficiando: Do you know Shou-Mei, which is my favorite? I used to get it at a local teahouse, but I can't find a local source anymore, and haven't searched online yet. Shou-Mei is astringent, clear and simple, very refreshing. With just enough caffeine to give my low blood pressure a lift !!

Low blood pressure?  Have you thought about wearing a piece of Bloodstone jewelry (sometimes referred to as Heliotrope).  It works great toward regulating/balancing blood pressure (lifts low bp … lowers high bp).

Gossip - The Game
Do any of you remember the game gossip?  People in the very same room sit in a circle and the first person whispers something into the ear of the person sitting next to them.  This process is repeated until the piece of information gets back to the original teller.  And it's usually changed, rather colorfully, by that time.

Between the Grapevines and Gaia messages that I have received, what started out as me having a book about abundant living in the midst of the publishing process (no contract yet), has turned into a fully published book about birds in the state of Illinois.

Please note:  Drop the Bags and No One Will Get Hurt: A Practical Guide to Abundant Living is not published yet, and it doesn't have anything to do with birds.  Although with the tremendous interest that has been shown, maybe that will be my sequal …

First, I have to laugh at your “published versus not-yet-published book that is NOT about birds” comment … information traveling along the highway of communication can certainly pick up a little extra color and flair, to be sure.  One thing that is safe to say is NOT fuzzy or muddled is that there will be plenty of people ready to own a copy of your book Drop the Bags and No One Will Get Hurt: A Practical Guide to Abundant Living when it does get published and becomes available for purchase.  Add my name to that already-long list.

Also, thank you to ~KES for providing the link (in the comments section on Laurie's blog entry The Ripple Effect - Boomerang Style) so that I could find my way to this features group discussion.  Always nice to be invited to a tea party.

Laurie, you were also the first person to welcome me to the gaia community.  The invitation alone was much appreciated, but that you did it in such a generous and sincere way really caught my attention.  You made it personal and believable, and I could hear your smile in every word.  I was feeling a bit awkward and unsure, and your kind words held the promise of an environment that not only welcomed exploration, but actually encouraged pushing the boundaries.

In true “ripple effect” nature, it also prompted me to discard my own inhibitions and to reach out and be the first person to welcome others to the gaia community, (or to be the first person to comment on one of their blog entries).  Even in my comments I tried to follow your lead, by being sincere and personal, and also extending the hand of friendship and encouragement.  Not surprisingly, the “boomerang effect” blossomed, in that the very act of me reaching out to others had the immediate effect of expanding my own circle of friends within the gaia community.

This is only one of the ways in which you've already impacted my growth in a short amount of time.  Whether in the area of writing, expression, growth, exploration, or making intentional choices, your voice has become a welcome visitor in my head.  You truly are an inspiration and a model of what it means to live a life with intention, and I am grateful that our paths (intentionally) crossed within the gaia community.  Thank you for sharing your spirit.  Thank you for adding your color to the beautiful gaia community garden.

It is my perspective that the heart is the intersection of thinking (logic) and feeling (emotion).  When these two powerful aspects of self are healthy and used in conjunction with each other, we operate from a place of wisdom–the heart.  This brings clarity in decision-making, removes drudgery and adds exponentially to the abundance factor!

Your photography is outstanding.  It speaks directly to the heart.  One of my favorite pieces of yours (although it's hard to decide) is “Flower Shop Window”
(I posted  it here). 

To me, the angle and reflection are other-worldly.  It hints at the ability to pass between space and time.  It draws you in for closer examination … like looking at memories.  What we don't know is …

… are they memories from the past, or have they not happened yet?

What I do is backtrack and look at the post button and find that my message is still in tact a lot and I just need to upload a photo.  Always copy or put longer things on Word so you can paste.  Our computers are just machines so this will help be at a slight gentle cause.

2. What do you most dislike about Gaia/wish would change?  How are you helping to change that?
LAURIE: There are times when I am invited to visit a group to “throw in mytwo-cents worth” on a topic. In order to do that, I actually have to become a member of the group.  Like most people, my time is limited.  As such, I try to limit the number of groups that I make a commitment to because I don’t want to become a member of a group where I can’t spend quality time and make quality contributions. I have messaged in the suggestion of a one or two time interactive “visit” opportunity.

3. What do you most like about Gaia?  How are you helping to maintain/enhance it?
LAURIE: I particularly appreciate that most of the people who are in the Gaia Community are environmentally and spiritually conscious.  That gives us something in common right from the get-go!  I direct my clients and customers to the Gaia Community via word-of-mouth and through my website, www.HolEssence.com.

From my point of view too Laurie, I agree that you bring to Gaia our original intention of how it is when we joined and I feel so much closer and safe with all of you from how you make it safe for us to just communicate.  Thanks!!!

Last week Laurie posted that feeling free is a state of mind but geographically speaking she feels most free among trees. From what I know of Laurie, tree's are a wonderful metaphor for who she is. Trees provide so much spiritually to the world.

Laurie, I'm getting to see each visitor to your thread in an even warmer light; and I thank you and ~KES and all for doing this. This is exactly what these features are for; in a way they become  a feature of all visitors; the world of Gaia through Laurie's energy!

Your  message of heart is exactly what is needed for our time. As my mentor used to say: Think with your heart, feel with your mind.”  A way to raising the vibration as you do so effortlessly.

I really loved that poem about trees, George. Even though you haven't used the word, you have described the celestial tree!

On a more grounded note, Laurie, when group cultivators or moderators request your presence for a special feature, I think they'll understand if you join just to post - wish someone for a birthday and so on - and then leave if you need to. For you to become a member and ex-member is just two clicks of the button. But I see that the reason you don't want to do that, is because of your deep sense of responsibility.

It's something I 'm going to ask in the Mod Pod, and see what cultivators/mods feel about this. I know Gael / Zephyr had brought this up once in the Think Tank and we'd discussed it in this group as well.

What I wished to say earlier today was how wondrously drawn to this conversation, more so than any other that I have taken part in.  For throughout the day yesterday and this morning I read every one of the posts here… I love how the vibration of this pod/group/community as been gently mounting, enfolding each and everyone of us… 

What I wish to ask about is your practice. I was so thrilled to know that the map is there to shine light on my own vision of weaving the science of mind, with the healing of the soul and spirit… 

For the past two years and longer I have been seeking my BA in Psychology, in the past year I have had the vision of weaving the energy of spirit, through Shamanism, photography, and the practice of Reiki, and psychology in to a nice abundant practice… yet at the moment is a vision… One that I see in the near future but unsure how to manifest it to evolve… 

What is my question or quest: Maybe you could share with us how your practice came about.  Why did you chose this Holistic path? What where your hardships or roadblock if any? Or did you see the path clearly and followed it to manifestation?

In an attempt to answer your questions (and the others I have received via Gaia email), the following explanation is broken up into sections.  Simply jump to the section of interest to you. 

The Four Clairs
We all have four “clairs” – “Clair” being the French word for “clear.”
Clairvoyance/clear seeing
Claircognizance/clear knowing
Clairaudience/clear hearing
Clairsentience/clear feeling

Two of them are more prominent (ride in the front seat of the car, so to speak), while two are secondary (are along for the ride and help out every now and then).  Different people have different combinations.

You asked, “Why did you choose the holistic path?” 
I knew pretty much from the get-go that traditional western medicine was not for me.  When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41, I watched (with horror) at what she went through.  I determined then and there that there had to be a different way.  My perspective (that doesn’t make me right, it just makes it my perspective) is that our bodies were not designed for most of the procedures that I saw her and many others go through.  I am confident that our bodies were designed with the innate ability to heal themselves.

With that in mind, I went to school, in earnest …

Holistic Health Practitioner
I am an HHP (Holistic Health Practitioner) and practice what is referred to as Energy Medicine.  An MD (Medical Doctor) practices conventional medicine (also referred to as traditional western medicine).

One of the differences between an HHP and an MD (Medical Doctor) is what we treat.  Generally speaking, most medical doctors work with the structures and systems of the human body.  They treat symptoms when something goes wrong in one or more of these areas.  I, on the other hand, work with the

Three energy systems of the body

Chakras
There are 7 major energy centers and 21 minor energy centers in the human body.  Think of these as little power plants sprinkled at strategic locations throughout the body.  These energy centers are called chakras.

Meridians
There are 14 meridians throughout the human body.  These are like a transportation system that the energy travels along.  If you were to go to an acupuncturist for an acupuncture treatment, they would strategically place hair-fine needles in energetic “trigger” spots based on your meridian lines.

Aura
There is this invisible shell of energy around each on of us that science calls an electromagnetic field.  Another word that is commonly used for the shell of energy that surrounds us is and HEF (Human Energy Field) or ‘aura.'

As humans we are literally ‘electrical’ in nature.  At the base of our torso we have a very slow and very low frequency.  At the top of our head we have a very high, very fast frequency.  And then there are different levels in-between those two locations.  If a person was to experience cardiac arrest, their heart would stop.

The first thing that is done in an effort to help this person is to use a defibrillator.  Two metal paddles are placed above each breast (the location of two minor energy centers (chakras) on the human body).  Those metal paddles are attached by electrical wires to something that looks and acts somewhat like a car battery.  When the physician flips the ‘on’ switch, electricity surges into the person, causing their body to actually lift up off the gurney and slam back down.  If all goes well, the electricity/energy ‘jump starts’ their heart again. 

Four Energetic Conditions
There are only four conditions that human energy can be: balanced, blocked, excessive, or deficient.  The only healthy one of these four conditions is balanced.  A person can not become ill if their energy is in balance.  As such, a Holistic Health Practitioner goes after the cause/source (energy imbalance) as opposed to treating symptoms.

Modalities
An HHP does not diagnose or prescribe medication.  We incorporate the use of Energy Medicine such as Reflexology, Crystal Therapy, Reiki, Cranial Therapy, Therapeutic Touch, Hemi-Sync, Vibrational Therapy, Breathwork, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Sound Healing, and many more.

I enjoy learning.  As such, I decided to add Clinical Hypnotherapy to my practice.  During that process, I also learned Guided Imagery and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Lifestyle
As a Holistic Health Practitioner, I also look at a person’s lifestyle (i.e., level of stress, sleep patterns), exercise, and nutritional habits including any vitamin, mineral and/or herbal supplements they are taking).  I find out about any chemicals they ingest (i.e., prescription medication, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, sugar, and any ‘recreational’ drugs they may take as well).

As an HHP, I am more-than-interested in all three aspects of a human being - body, mind and spirit.  Everything that an HHP does is natural and works toward healing the whole person.  Everything that an HHP does complements traditional western medicine.

An MD does prescribe medication when they feel it is necessary.  They also incorporate the use of surgical procedures if they feel a situation dictates that type of intervention.  An MD is interested in the physical aspect of a person.  An MD works toward curing a person.

As Carolyn Myss states in her book, Anatomy of the Spirit:

Healing & Curing
Healing and curing are not the same thing.  A ‘cure’ occurs when one has successfully controlled or abated the physical progression of an illness.  Curing a physical illness, however, does not necessarily mean that the emotional and psychological stresses that were a part of the illness were also alleviated.  In this case it is highly possible, and often probably, than an illness will recur. The process of curing is usually passive, That is to say that in many cases the patient is inclined to give his or her authority over to the physician and prescribed treatment instead of actively challenging the illness and reclaiming health.

Healing, on the other hand, is an active and internal process that includes investigating one’s attitudes, memories, and beliefs with the desire to release all negative patterns that prevent one’s full emotional and spiritual recovery.  This internal review inevitably leads one to review one’s external circumstances in an effort to recreate one’s life in a way that serves activation of will - the will to see and accept truths about one’s life and how one has used one’s energies; and the will to begin to use the energy for the creation of love, self-esteem, and health.

Healing (as used in the context of Energy Work) is the process of bringing aspects of our self that are out of balance back into balance again - the return to greater wholeness.  There is an ideal form each of us has, this ideal form being the highest and clearest expression of who we are.  Pain or disease comes from any deviation between the person’s current form in the three-dimensional physical world and this ideal form.  Healing, then, is to assist the body back to its natural state of homeostasis - the ideal balance between all major parts of our being - body, mind and spirit.

Book Recommendations

Energy Medicine
Energy medicine is a holistic philosophy that teaches, “I am responsible for the creation of my health.  I therefore participated, at some level, in the creation of this illness.  I can participate in the healing of this illness by healing myself, which means simultaneously healing my emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual being.”

Many times people are curious about the initials after my name.  Here is a key that defines those:
PhD – Doctor of Philosophy in Holistic Therapies

CHT – Clinical Hypnotherapist
RMT – Reiki Master Teacher

I am also a Certified Professional Life Coach.  I found that training to be exceptionally useful in helping people to close the gap between thinking about doing and actually doing; to help take them from where they are, to where they want to be.

When an obstacle shows up I embraced it; sit with it for a while to learn from it; acknowledge my learning; thank it for the lesson it taught; and then send it on its merry way.

I saw the path with tremendous clarity.  But I did not follow it to manifestation.  Rather, I spoke it into being.  I believe in the tremendous power of vibration.  It is – after all – what triggers and gives momentum to earthquakes, tidal waves, and avalanches.

Hi Laurie … I'm back for another cuppa, and to enjoy the fragrance of sharing and generosity that seems to follow in your foot steps.  This Featuring concept is a lovely way to honor someone (such as yourself) that contributes so much to the gaia community, and also to introduce us to other gaia members with whom we already have one thing in common … we have an appreciation and enthusiasm for how you lead by example, and have been impacted by your willingness to extend the hand of friendship.  What a beautiful demonstration of how ONE person can make a difference.

If we each aspire to find our own way to duplicate your ability to connect your energy to another, then the possibilities are breathtaking.  In fact, that might be one of the best lessons I've learned from spending time with you.  Having an appreciation for your innate ability to personally connect and encourage others is a natural response when meeting you for the first time, but somehow, for me, you've also managed to bridge the gap between appreciation and action.  And this from someone who has a history of having a hard time marrying intention with action.  After meeting you and just beginning to get to know you, it very quickly became apparent that if I truly want to honor the depth of what you've shared with us, then there is no other option than to go out among the community and do what I can to duplicate the principles of the experience with others…and so I did.  Then I took the same ideas outside the gaia community.

On my end, it's been pretty amazing to see how this minor shift in how I approach the world has directly impacted the very color and flavor of my day.  It's a bit like a scavenger hunt.  Now it seems I'm always on the look-out for ways to interject a bit more generosity of spirit into any conversation.  How can I let this person know that I hear them?  How can I leave them with a quiet smile etched into their consciousness?  And the one I'm still working on perfecting … how can I create an urge within them to duplicate this experience with others?

I'm not sure I can put my finger on what it was about how you deliver your heartfelt sharing that moved me from appreciation to action.  Maybe it was that I never heard judgement or scolding in your voice.  Instead, I heard encouragement, sincerity, and generosity.  You didn't point to the things that I might be doing that are in opposition of reaching my goal, but instead, made a point to notice the things I was doing that took me ever closer to realizing my potential.  Maybe, for me, that was the key that unlocked the door between appreciation and action.  Every time I catch myself consciously and intentionally altering how I connect to others, I can't help but think about your words “what you don't change, you choose”.  Thank you for helping me be more aware of what it is that I'm choosing.

I'm also grateful that this thread has given me a chance to head back over to HolEssence, (and to the various links that you provide on your website).  I've been meaning to take the time to explore and poke about a bit, and not surprisingly, am already knee-deep in working my way through some very interesting topics on your website.  That thread is the best!

Hi Laurie,

Thanks for the invite.  The photo you posted featuring a lagoon and a hill is found in Mauritius (as you already know). The  hill is called Le Morne Brabant, which  literally means in an older version of Mauritius Creole “Brabant Hill” and Brabant (in case you are wondering) refers to the name of the family to whom this land belonged to. It is also the last refuge to native birds, trees, insects and small animals. I love this place a lot because it is very peaceful!! It is also home to the Kestrel and a UNESCO World Heritage site for Slavery and Maroonage.

On a more personal note, I do not live in Mauritius anymore but I do visit.

Wow … how unbelievably gratifying to come back to this thread and read your post, Laurie.  It is like a mini-primer on holistic medicine.  All those complicated questions and the over-abundance of available information narrowed down into easily digested sections.  Thank you so much for taking the time to break it down into bite-sized pieces, and for simplifying the concepts.  I'm one of those folks that is always hesitant to ask too many questions (I know that might be hard to believe).  Some silly attachment to not wanting to show my ignorance, I guess.  Of course, the only way to learn is to ask questions.

Meenakshi and ~KES (Kathy) – thanks for the nod.  It can be hard to put into words how even the smallest shift can have a tremendous impact, and meeting Laurie and paying attention to not only what she shares but HOW she shares the information has given me plenty of room to explore … and to take action.  It's very exciting to also be led to the realization that it really can be as simple as that.  Awareness.  Intention.  Action.

The vast majority of the time, people come to me.  Usually it is for help in one of three categories: Energy Medicine, Personal Development or Spiritual Growth.
There are occasions, however, when someone will approach me (perhaps it's after a presentation that I have given) and their energy is less than inviting.

My first thought is a reminder to myself that 'we are one.'  I then try to discern (not judge) the person's motive (not what they are doing/saying, but why they are doing/saying).  Depending on the situation, I might then say something like, “Help me to understand (who, what, when, where, why or how) you feel this way.

4 What would you advise someone who is joining Gaia today? ~Kathy
LAURIE:  Don’t be shy. Look around.  Click on “Explore Gaia Community” (upper left-hand side of the screen).  Once there, click on “Members” (under Community).  Once there, find someone who has the same interest as you by typing insomething that you are interested in doing.  For instance, I had my husband type in “pilot” and he was able to find many people with a similar interest.  From there it’s a matter of using the “Invite as Friend” feature.

5 How has being on Gaia changed my off-line life?  
LAURIE:  I find that I don’t spend as much time reading because I am interacting with my Gaia friends.

6 How does your life off-line impact your presence on Gaia?
LAURIE: Tuesday through Saturday I am with clients during the day so my Gaia time is very early morning and when I return home in the evening.  Sunday and Monday I am able to devote much more time inside the Gaia Community.

7 What do you think has been your main contribution to the Gaia Community?
LAURIE:  Reaching out to people who have been in the Gaia Community for a long time, but who have a small number of friends; and reaching out to brand new members in the Gaia Community.

8 What’s the biggest benefit you have received from the Gaia Community?
LAURIE: Interactive, ongoing friendship. I have Gaia friends all over the globe – here in the United States,Canada, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and Africa, to give you an idea.  I am genuinely interest in the who, what, when, where, why and how of their lives.  They, in turn, have the same interest in me.
 
9  What do you believe the Gaia Community could contribute more toward your ideal world?
LAURIE:  It’s already contributing a great deal by providing safe space forenvironmentally and spiritually conscious people to interact with eachother.

Hope you're having an inspiration-filled day at work! :)

Myself, I am directing room/house cleaning (one of the older boys just laughingly told their grandpa I'm “torturing” them, lol, and working on a few things on the web. All this talk of tea sure has me thirsty so I may just be brewing up a quick cup of my favorite tea before embarking on my next “mission”. I am also reminded that I need to touch base with a few holistic providers in my area to see if they would like to attend my festival and spread the word about their practice (IMO not enough people are aware of or visit HHPs). “Conventional” medicine is so hard on the body!

On another note, as many here know, I am “in and out” around Gaia these days due to a number of other committments that currently need my time, and the conversation on joining groups and posting left me motivated to share my own “two cents” on “occasional posters”.

I belong to a number of excellent groups, but I rarely find time to visit all of them every time I am on Gaia. However, I feel that my energies are always in support of those groups, through the connection we have made even when I am not posting directly. Sometimes I think having more groups than I can comortably be invovled in consistently, helps me to focus more easily on what I feel “called” to participate in and how. Sometimes I add support or direction to a conversation through a post, but just as often I simply stand quietly in support of my fellow Gaians with mindful intent. I think a healthy smattering of each “type” of poster is needed to keep any group healthy and entertaining. Not posting doesn't mean group members are not co-creating and adding their energies “behind the scenes”! I know I am grateful to all the members of my (currently quiet) group and I send them blessings daily! Lol (We're still friends if you don't post - even though I love to “hear your voice”!) I recognize that sometimes our virtual connections are just a “reminder” of our very real energetic connections, and I think part of the beauty of a community such as Gaia, is that for the most part, when you form a friendship here, that “hidden” aspect of connection is often recognized as well.

Everyone -

I just had a window of opportunity to take a photograph of the lovely vase of flowers that we found waiting for us at our door when we reached HolEssence this morning.  There was no note.  No clue as to who they are from.

I have them in my office in a place of honor next to Awen, where I can enjoy their beauty and subtle fragrance.

I don't know how one of you managed to pull this off (as this had to have been done extraordinarily early) and I don't think that any of you lives in my geographic area.

it's very good! make sure you have some jam or jelly for a side to make it even better :D another finnish recipe that i recommend you and your hubby try is nissu. it's a type of bread…it is AMAZING! the nissu i have is covered with cinnamon and sugar…YUM!!
