Featuring ~ Laurie Buchanan ~ Listen with your heart - 2

~KES said Jul 7, 6:37 AM:

This is continued from - Thread #1 of the same topic:

Featuring ~ featuring Laurie Buchanan ~ Listen with your heart”

For a yummy piece of Tunnel of Fudge Cake & a cuppa warmth… This week we are all taking a trip to Crystal Lake, IL to hang out, meet & chat here with

You will be commenting here, her Grapevine & her blogs & discover how Laurie's presence on Gaia sets the best example of community so you will also be gaining more as we share life. These are quotes I chose from a few of Laurie's Blogs: “My meditation practice focuses on the breath; it is something that I pay frequent and close attention to.  To me, breathing feels full; it feels intentional.” breathe

“For me, freedom is a state of mind.  It is inner-peace.  It is me determining my attitude and spiritual well-being.  It comes from within.”  Feeling Free

Every person, place, thing and experience that I have encountered is a thread interwoven into the fabric of my life's tapestry that adds color, nuance, depth and character.”  The Ripple Effect

“When you remove the distractions, the hustle-and-bustle, the juggling of multiple platters, the busy-ness;  the attention naturally flows to what remains … being alive.” Q&R on Simplicity

The drive behind my purpose is compassion.” from her book: Drop the Bags and No One Will Get Hurt: A Practical Guide to Abundant Living. © 2009 Weather

This special feature will include Laurie's amazing  HolEssence website which we are going to also share tips in our Gaia Networking threads of pure heart & wisdom where I found another gem on the about page:

“Being respectful of the Earth and its natural resources, Laurie's goal is to leave the slightest footprint possible on the planet; while at the same time, making a lasting impression on its inhabitants ~ one that is positive, uplifting, constructive, & healing.”

Now for our  peaceful ritual of tea as we co-create this week and our first question, I asked:

1. Overall, on a scale of 1-10 how important is the Gaia community in your life?  What factors contribute to your score?

LAURIE:  I would say 8.  It’s equally as important as my morning cuppa tea which is very important.  I intentionally wake up early so that I can weave the daily Questions & Reflections into my meditation time.

We invite more & more of your communications. [ I recommend that you open all links in a separate window or tab  [Control or Right Click] so that you can share your adventures with us back here.]
From the heart… Kathy/~KES

Love and freedom intertwine in human life,
forming a core duality in harmony with the concept of Yin and Yang.

Because love and freedom are connected parts of a whole,
each requires the other.
A lack of love harms freedom, a lack of freedom harms love.

Our dual nature means that love includes both a sense of oneness
with others and respect for each person as a unique, free
and self~controlling individual.

Freedom requires love, no less than love requires freedom.

I thought I heard the rustling of a goodie bag! Of course, there is nothing that can get my attention faster - unless it is the smell of fresh coffee brewing first thing in the morning. Thanks for the treats Sylvia.

Well, Laurie your continued link feels bit like a fresh start, like turning a page or starting a new journal. Which brings me to a question. First some context… I was reading peoples posts in your feature who commented that you were one of their first friends. I can't imagine anyone better to be my first friend on Gaia. I was actually invited to Gaia (at the time it was Zaadz) by the lovely Zoey Ryan who I knew/know in my off-line life. I remember how important it was to have someone who knew how a social networking (or at least this site) worked and who were able to show me the ropes. You and I met because I was out throwing seeds around. By this time I was comfortable sending a “friends” invitation and taking the initiative to invite. At first it wasn't so easy though and my heart would kind of race everytime  I hit the send button. It was only over time that I became comfortable and felt like I belonged and people were generally warm and wanting to be “friends”

So with this context… now my question. Are you ready? Oh! Sorry… yes, I can wait until you finish getting the licorice unstuck from between your teeth. Okay.

Laurie, what advice or suggestions would you give seasoned Gaia members to help build and maintain the health and strength of our community? (Yes I know it is a leading question but I think/imagine there is more - I just wanted to get us warmed up… and give you a chance to finish that candy.)

This is like a reunion here of Zaadz.  We should have a united life coach day on gaia.  Terrill, you bring memories of when I first met Zoey too and I love her blog on Mothers, Grandmothers & Daughters. Then we have Mercale's blog on  Life Every Changing, Ever in Bloom where I am beginning to see from just a bit of surfing with my mouse in hand… how serendipitous things inter connect on Gaia.

Terrill, thanks for giving us The Art of Celebrating today… this thread is beginning to feel like a rocketship… headed straight up and vertical. That covered on cuppa in my spill proof surfing cup of tea but brings such pleasure moments to all of the friends on Featuring ~ Laurie Buchanan ~ Listen with your heart ~ Page 1 of this heart listening journal.

I am on the edge of my seat listening to what unfolds.  Thanks for the warmth everyone and for your words of pure value & joy.  ~Kathy

Terrill –

Now that I’ve got the licorice and candied ginger worked out of my teeth …

It is my perspective that the three-legged stool of health and strength in our community is comprised of:

Reaching Out – to new members and to people who have been members for a while, but who are a wee bit shy and or hesitant in initiating communication and/or involvement.  Reaching out also includes inviting friends outside the Gaia Community to join.

Following Through – if we say we are going to do something, we need to do it – in a timely manner.

Consistency – somewhat like boundaries, friendships need to be maintained – not just established.

Well, I'd like to add a dessert to our list of offerings, one of my favorites, Raspberry Delight however, for those inclined to make your own non-virtual version, here is the recipe I use:

1pkg. vanilla wafers
1/4 lb. soft margarine or butter
3/4 c. soft margarine or butter
2 c. confectioner's (powdered)
1 regular size tub of cool whip (most recipes say 8oz but I think bigger is better here)
2 6oz pkgs (or equivalent) frozen raspberries
1 c. hot water
3pz pkg raspberry jello mix
2 8 oz pkg of cream cheese

1) Mix hot water and jello mix until fully dissolved. Add frozen berries, mixing well and breaking up chunks as you go. Put in refrigerator until partially set.

2) Crush wafers thoroughly and mix in 1/4 lb. soft butter until all crumbs are moist. Press firmly into the bottom of a 9x13 pan, making the crust as even as possible.

3) In large bowl, beat 3/4c. confectioners sugar, remaining butter, and cream cheese until fluffy. Spoon evenly over top of crust. Pour partially set jello mixture (should be thick but not set) over cream cheese layer. Chill 8 hours or until jello is fully set. Cover with Cool Whip and serve.

The picture here is not quite the same as the recipie above will look (the layers are switched and a cream cheese mixture layer is added in mine) just FYI  :)

It's rich…fruity…decadent….glorious….Mmmmm….I'm resisting the urge to make some RIGHT NOW  lol!    I hope you'll enjoy this virtual treat! (and maybe the non-virtual one as well!)

from page 1 for those that can't open the thread:
~Kes: I am interested in your dream Laurie of interconnecting & learnng this week some approaches for simplicity in being more holistic in our approach to health, well being & building community from our own environments by sharing some ideas. What are steps or tips we can all take to know we are being holistic.

I would be honored to get tips on how to begin with a new person so we can let others know what holistic is. I thought about this after viewing your website HolEssence.

Laurie said Monday: The verbal picture you painted of the workplace where everyone works together beautifully … oh the satisfaction, the fulfillment that would be derived from such an uplifting environment! You are correct in that for the most part, that setting is the exception rather than the rule – office or home.  It is something to be developed, learned and then taught.  Not taught with words alone.  All too often that is simply lip service.  But taught through modeling – being a living example – being a living meditation. The quote that you shared of Peter Senge, The 5th Discipline, is excellent!  Thank you.  Inter-dependence.  Inter-connection.  We are, indeed, one.

Some of you who know me, know that I struggled with the daily questions on July 3, 4 and 5, especially as it related to independence and interdependence.   After stirring it around in my “brain-pot” for a bit, I came to personal resolution.  Here is a LINK to what I posted last evening.

You mentioned that you are interested in learning more about my perspective regarding simplicity and approaches to holistic health, wellbeing, building community and our environments.  Much of what I am about to share comes from my book (not published yet - I am in the midst of that process),

“Drop the Bags and No One Will Get Hurt: A Practical Guide to Abundant Living.”
Simplicity

To my way of thinking simplicity is efficiency.  It is a clearing of clutter, mental or otherwise.
Holistic
Holistic is a mindset and approach that emphasizes the importance of the whole – body, mind and spirit - and the interdependence of its parts.  A truly holistic mindset and approach applies this on an individual and collective basis.
Wellbeing – or Wellness
It is my perspective that wellness is the quality of being healthy in body, mind and spirit; many times the result of deliberate effort.  It is an approach to health that emphasizes prevention of illness as opposed to focusing on the treatment of disease. Like a diamond, each of us has multiple facets – physical, occupational, social, emotional, environmental, intellectual and spiritual.  Working in conjunction with each other they provide us with the ability to live life to the fullest and to maximize personal potential. Wellness involves continually learning and making changes to enhance our state of wellbeing.  When all of these facets are healthy and working in harmony with each other we experience optimal wellness.
Building Community
I will direct your attention back to the LINK that I provided earlier.  Building community is very much a ripple effect that starts in our very own home … extends outward … and then in boomerang style, comes right back again.  I fully embrace the belief that community is not local, but global.
Environment
Each of us has a personal energy signature that we are responsible for.  Everything in our environment contributes to this signature–people, plants, animals, appliances, color, sound, electronics, food, etc.  When each of us assesses these energetic contributions we need to ask ourselves if they are, indeed, what we want to receive?  Are they making a healthy contribution to our energy systems?  If not, then what do we intend to do about it?  What are the positive, realistic actions steps involved?

On my 50th birthday in 2007 I took a brief hermitage to discover the most important thing that I had learned to date.  It was, and remains this:

Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.”

Tips
Bottom line on top … when you break it down to parade rest; when you remove the clutter; what is left?  Your essence.  If you think of your essence as a car, who is driving – ego or Spirit?  The best tip I know for growing a holistic mindset and approach is to let Spirit have the wheel (and do not be a backseat driver) …

Laurie!

Siona said Monday: I can't tell you how wonderful, for me, your presence on Gaia has been; I remember when you first joined being startled to discover that you were a newcomer, just because of how graciously and naturally your posts seemed to flow within the community. I'm so glad KES has chosen to highlight you here, and so glad you found us. (Also, I love kestrels, and love that you choose one: you embody their soaring reserve so beautifully. :)

Trust me, I've got a belly button.  (And all kidding aside, my mother had TWO.  When she was a kid she charged 25-cents for people to see it.  Smart little girl, she!).

Len and I have been married for almost 30 years.  Our anniversary is March 17th (St. Patrick's Day)  We eloped.  (Spent a grand total of $32.50.  Worked out well as us Scots are rather frugal.  In other words, so tight we squeak!).  He swears he drank too much green beer!

He's also my very best friend.  Because we both work at HolEssence (it's just the two of us), we are together A LOT!  Much easier for me than for him (he's the kitten side of Leo; I'm the anal side of Libra).

He's the cook (the best one on the planet).  I'm the yard work person (not the best one on the planet, but enjoy it tremendously).  We have one son, Eoghan (Evan) and one daughter-in-law, Maureen (although Eoghan calls her “Moe”).  If you check out my Gaia photo album you will see that we have three dogs and two cats.  Hence, I'm often referred to as, “Dr. Doolitte.”

A saying goes: “Knowledge is only a rumour, until it's in the muscles.” Well Laurie, your muscles are tremendous. Empowerment of the holistic approach, slowly but surely gaining territory.

I have a question. Do you often get feedback from the area of traditional / conventional medicine? Do you have relations with people in conventional medicine?

Great suits by the way!

Nion -

Welcome, I'm glad that you came back for another visit.  You asked if I ever receive feedback from traditional/conventional medicine?  And, do I have relationships with people in conventional medicine?

Great questions!  The answer is yes.

In the area of Bodywork for the Childbearing Year, I work with physicians who are affiliated with the Mercy Health System.  They refer mother's-to-be, to me, for care.

When couples are having trouble conceiving, I receive referrals from the Fertility Centers of Illinois.  Pre-conception Reflexology is wonderful for helping that process along.  As a side note, this modality is not exclusive to the perspective mother.  It is helpful for the prospective father as well.

The Illinois Pain Treatment Center oftentimes refers patients who suffer post-operatively, or from migraines and/or fibromyalgia.

Advanced Surgical Care of Northern Illinois refers patients to me on a post-operative basis.

People who are in transition are referred to me by Hospice.

I speak on a regular basis to cancer survival groups at the request of Good Shepherd Hospital.

In addition to traditional (conventional) western medicine practitioners, doctors of osteopathy, naturopaths and physical therapists, I have a wonderful working relationship with complementary medicine practitioners such as, acupuncturists, chiropractors and nutritionists (plus we’re conveniently located kitty-corner from the Crystal Lake Health Food store – they send people over on a regular basis).

I also have the privilege of presenting to the health classes at each of our three local high school annually.  This is done in a cooperative effort to spread awareness of natural preventive and curative options.

As far as, “learning and exploring new fields of healing, wellness and therapy” - you are absolutely correct.  To stay certified and licensed in the State of Illinois I am required to earn continuing education units (CEU's) annually.  This means staying on the cutting edge of my areas of specialty:  Energy Medicine, Personal Development and Spiritual Growth.

Sylvia –

You asked, “Given the range of your health care involvements and contacts - do you know what kind of efforts are going on around that issue in the complementary medical communities?”

Even though you specifically asked about complementary medicine … for our friends who may be unaware of the difference between complementary and alternative medicine, I would like to lay some groundwork prior to addressing the question.  Many people use the terms interchangeably, but they are distinctly different:

Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine. An example of a complementary medicine is the use of Reiki to reduce the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.

Alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. An example of an alternative medicine is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that has been recommended by a conventional doctor.

And then, of course, there is integrative medicine …

Integrative medicine, as defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), combines mainstream medical therapies and complementary and alternative therapies for which there is high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.

In my private practice at HolEssence, I use complementary medicine.

That said …

… here is Sylvia’s question repeated, and my response:

“Given the range of your health care involvements and contacts - do you know what kind of efforts are going on around that issue in the complementary medical communities?”

I assure you that the good news about the wide number of both complementary and alternative healthcare options is getting out.

On a local basis …
Earlier in this discussion thread I mentioned that I am given the opportunity to make Energy Medicine presentations and demonstrations at the local high schools.  This privilege is not exclusive to me; a number of other complementary and alternative practitioners take advantage of this opportunity as well.

Every month we make classes and workshops available through HolEssence.  We have guest speakers who represent a number of complementary types of modalities. Examples include: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), BodyTalk, Shamanism, Colon Hydrotherapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) – to name but a few.

Our local National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter makes a point of nodding to complementary options in the arena of mental health.

Interestingly, our local La Leche League has had me; along with other complementary and alternative practitioners, do presentations and demonstrations as well.

On a state and national basis …
There are a multitude of complementary and alternative practitioners who contribute regularly to newspapers and magazines.  The result is a wide brushstroke of exposure.  Personally, I write articles for three magazines.  Two are geared toward the greater Chicago land area; the other has a national audience.

The Association for Humanistic Psychology has an arm that is far reaching.  They present complementary options on a regular basis.

There are many schools who teach concepts and options that are ‘outside the box.’  Two of the schools that come to mind immediately are Caroline Myss, and Donna Eden (there are many, many more).  Because of the number of students, the ripple effect is far reaching.

The Conference Works is well known for providing complementary medicine workshops all across the North American continent.

Sylvia, this is just a tidbit of knowledge from my little corner of the world.  Compound that with efforts from all across the globe and it gains momentum from the cumulative effect.  Thank you for asking the question; it was excellent!

Hi, Laurie - *thank you* for the depth and breadth of your reply - and the care and knowledge you share through it.  Your clarifying the distinctions between “alternative”, “complementary”, and “integrative” medicine is especially helpful to me.

I was specifically wondering whether you knew any individuals or groups involved in political activism around the health care “reform” legislation that the US Congress is currently writing.  I know that there is an interfaith group www.faithfulreform.org addressing issues of justice.  I don't know off hand of any alternative group that is addressing holistic care issues in the legislation - and I was wondering if you or anyone else reading this post does.  Feel free to e-mail me about this issue if you would prefer.

I sincerely wish I could say that I know of individuals or groups involved in political activism around the health care 'reform' legilation that the US Congress is currently writing.  I do not.  Even in the Green Party which I am affiliated with I am not aware.

Please know that does not mean they do not exist - it simply means that I am not aware.

Hi Sylvia,  Some of my betterment groups that I help with that is involved with health care and human rights on a secular level aligning with several groups is Citizens Commission on Human Rights which I have supported for the past 10 years and have seen the successes.  I recommend The Block Center who works with mankind groups.  If this doesn't align you can contact either and they will help route you to other groups that can help.  I trust this opens doors for you.  You can write to me and I can get you several other links that help on rights and help on litigation.

Reflexology, is something I believe in as well when it comes to healing the body, as well as the nerve points of our palms, fingers, and ears.  Nerve endings from our organs hold so much, and is where Western Medicine can learn a great deal from before writing out a prescription.

Okay, I am going to get serious for a minute, my daughter Faith has been home from school the last couple of days and if you'll remember, I told you she was a registered herbalist and reflexologist.  We were visiting with a neighbor and began discussing a healing technique I had recently seen on a local T.V. news program. Emory has done some work in this area, but I”m not sure this was the hospital they were showing.  A Nurse-Practitioner and assistant were using a Healing Hands method to help a woman in pain.  There was no physical contact, simply the passing of their hands over her prone body.  Can you detect an aura or energy field in distress?  Do you “see” a person's aura or use some sort of scoping tool to pick up emanations of energy from a patient?  Is bio-feed back part of your healing process?   Can you detect a negative energy “attached” to an otherwise healthy body?  Our neighbor has been under a doctor's care for lumbar troubles and muscle spasms.  Her therapists has said that unless her brain has permission to heal, she will be in some pain.  I am perplexed as this is not a frail or fanciful person, quite down to earth in fact.  She, of course is even more surprised than I am, she wants to see an x-ray and a shot, not mind work.  What can you tell me and still get some sleep tonight?

i do think that she should see a doctor for the physical troubles. and i think that a healing hands approach would also be helpful. not only for body, but for mind as well. i am a fan of using both in combination..as being my age, i am well fed up with the hospitals already..but i also know that they are very helpful, as is a natural healing approach, such as the healing hands.

i don't know what it is like for other people, but for me, i can feel other energies..which is a likely reason as to why i have such spastic and extreme mood swings (my gaia teachers/friends are helping me with this issue..and you happen to be one of them my dear). i guess you can feel them, or “see” them. there are technologies out there that claim to pick  them up, and display them as colors on a screen, but i do not trust technology with that sort of thing, nor do i like it. it takes the magic out of it..

Sandi -

I just now saw your question.  Sorry for the delayed response.  Long story short … bottom line on top:

Yes - I can detect an energy field in distress.

Yes - I can 'read' a person's energy personal energy signature.  I don't need anything but my hands to read, it.  But for people who want to 'see' something, I hold a pendulum (a method of dowsing).

You can use a bio-feedback machine to help assist with the healing process.  I don't use one in my practice.  I use a small emWave machine (from the Institute of HeartMath) to monitor my own respiration, heartbeat, and coherence level.

I can detect energy that is not serving someone well.  That is not to say that something is 'attached.'  Is that possible?  Yes.  Is it common?  No.  In fact, it is rare.

Tell your neighbor to ask Archangel Raphael (Heaven's Physician) for help AND to give him permission to intervene on her behalf.  (Because we have free will, it is rare for angels to interfere without our permission).  It's a two-step request.

This thread is bordering on TOO MUCH FUN …. first it was a cuppa and maybe a nibble of a sweet alongside, and next thing you know, we're in full-blown yummy goodness (complete with black licorice and candied ginger).  Now we've added a little down-south blues (nare, nare, nare, nare), and some cute eye candy with those clever and colorful costumes!  If I had known costumes were allowed …

Thanks for asking that last question, Nion … I was wondering something along the same lines … about how Laurie blends her holistic practice with the influences of western medicine, so it was great to see, by her answer, that there is a true sharing of information.  Clearly she has managed to bridge the gap between holistic and conventional (western) medicine.

Since Nion already opened the door on that one, how about if I change directions a bit?  Laurie, I was wondering if you could offer some insight into how someone (who is new to the holistic approach) might be able to both invite and offer acceptance of something, even while living the belief that we have the ability to heal ourselves?  As an example, for instance, how do you accept the condition of losing your ability to hear, but still work in the direction of maintaining or improving upon that same ability?  How are the two different precepts brought into harmony?  They appear to be opposing energies.

I feel certain I'm missing some basic practice that seamlessly connects the two, and even though I'm not sure I was able to properly articulate my question, I trust that you understand the intent.  As I continue to learn more about the holistic approach, how do I keep both sides of the question in harmony?

Nancy -  Thank you so much for popping in again.  I sincerely appreciate it. You asked the questions:

“I was wondering if you could offer some insight into how someone (who is new to the holistic approach) might be able to both invite and offer acceptance of something, even while living the belief that we have the ability to heal ourselves?  As an example, for instance, how do you accept the condition of losing your ability to hear, but still work in the direction of maintaining or improving upon that same ability?  How are the two different precepts brought into harmony?  They appear to be opposing energies.”

My perspective (that doesn't make me right; it simply makes it my perspective) is to not fight – anything.

Good, bad or in-between (i.e., illness, financial los, being alone, etc.), when we are equipped, we can embrace whatever comes our way instead of fighting it.

We can welcome adversity and invite it to sit for a spell so that we can make the opportunity to learn from it.  Once the lesson is grasped, we can acknowledge the learning, ease our embrace, and then send it on its way.  A better person for the visit.

That does not mean to say that while sitting with – and learning from – the adversity, we shouldn't take realistic, tangible action steps.

For example, if someone is losing their hearing …  … they may want to look into HearAll - all natural ear health supplements.  And/or perhaps they would check out Therapeutic Auricular Therapy (ear candling).

Sometimes our adversity is a natural result of choices and consequences – cause and effect.

At others, it is a gift from Spirit – an opportunity to learn.

In either case, it is an opportunity for personal development, and in some cases, spiritual growth.

Listen with your heart,

My goodness, a party going on with Laurie sitting in the cat bird seat. Or the Kestrel bird seat.

I would like to relay an experience I had with Laurie. I sent Laurie some cotton to energize and send back to me. Wow, that was a great experience.

Laurie energized the cotton and sent it back. I got it and showed it to my wife. She touched Laurie's energized cotton envelope and could immediately feel the energy, where? In the heart chakra of course.

A little later my wife again touched the envelope and experienced joy and loving at her heart chakra. When I showed her Laurie's note (with Laurie's “listen with your heart” tag) my wife laughed and said again, “yes, that is where I feel it, in my heart.”

Laurie may advise to “Listen with your heart” but I can attest that she also has the energy and inner wisdom to “talk to your heart.”

The energy that I got from experiencing the Laurie charged cotton is still with me. The tactile feeling was moving, warm, loving, and lightful. I thank her for attuning me to this higher frequency.

Gaia is lucky to have Laurie. Len is luckier.

I am blessed for having the opportunity to meet her, touch her energy and share my experience with the rest of you.

And Laurie, if you are reading this now, it is past your bedtime and you need to get to bed. If you are reading this in the morning, then good for you. :-)

My signature sign-off is “Listen with your heart.”   Whether
I am at the end of a paper letter or email correspondence my closing is
always “Listen with your heart.”

The heart is the intersection of thinking (logic) and feeling
(emotion).  When these two powerful aspects of self are healthy and used in conjunction with each other we operate from a place of wisdom–the heart.  This brings clarity in decision-making, removes drudgery and adds exponentially to the abundance factor.

As Greg Mortenson wrote in his book Three Cups of Tea, “When your heart speaks, take good notes.”  It is my perspective that you should not lead with your heart and follow only your emotions.  Nor should you lead with your head and follow only logic.  Use the powerful combination of both and listen with your heart.

Laurie sent me answers to the rest of our standard Gaia Networking questions that we ask in each feature to help enhance your involvement as a member: The questions are formatted with bold…

Q&A between ~Kes & Laurie

~ What’s the biggest benefit you have
received from the Gaia Community?

LAURIE:  Interactive, ongoing friendship.
I have Gaia friends all over the globe – here in the United States,
Canada, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and Africa, to give you an
idea.  I am genuinely interest
in the who, what, when, where, why and how of their lives.  They, in turn, have the same interest
in me.

~ Which pods are you involved in, and
what is your role in them?
What do you see as the special value of each for the community and
for yourself?  How has being
on Gaia changed your off-line life?

LAURIE:  These are the groups that I am part of:

“Gaia Networking – Enhance Your Community Experience” – active: a great
way to interact with like-minded people.

“50+Stars ~ A Half a Century and More on Earth” – active; a wonderful
place to celebrate being a ‘seasoned’ life traveler.

“Bear’s House of Many Colors” – always look when someone posts; I
contribute if I have something that adds value.  A great place to laugh!

“Global Coherence Initiative” – always look when someone posts; I
contribute if I have something that adds value.  I am a member of GCI both within the Gaia Community and
outside as well.  This is an
initiative that is near and dear to my heart.

“11:11 Progress Group” – I am more of a silent observer.  A very interesting and
thought-provoking group.

“Talespinner’s Tavern” – I am relatively new to this group.  Strap on your theatrical robes and
join the creativity.

“Gaia Support” – gosh, if anything needs breaking, they know to call me!

~ What do you believe the Gaia Community
could contribute more toward your ideal world?

LAURIE:  It’s already contributing a great deal by providing safe space for
environmentally and spiritually conscious people to interact with each
other.

~ What do you see as the future of the
Gaia community?  What do you
see the community doing one year from now?  Five years from now?

LAURIE:  Perhaps local networking groups that gather, face-to-face, if they want
to.  One of the groups I
belong to in Gaia—Global Coherence Initiative—has a somewhat local (an
hour’s drive for me) monthly meeting.  Many of the people in that group are part of the Global
Coherence Initiative organization http://www.glcoherence.org/

Who knows where the future will take us?  With like-minded people who work toward the highest and
best good with the heart-based knowledge that we are all interconnected …
the potential and possibility is unlimited!

~ How has the Gaia Networking Group help
you in your Gaia experience?

LAURIE: There are wonderful tips on everything you could want to know: from
technical (how to import a photograph, to featured members; from
announcements, to communicating through messages/Gaia mail – and
everything in-between.

~ How do you feel the Gaia Networking
Group can enhance all members’ community experience?

LAURIE:  I think that most of us in the group keep an eye out for new people and
invite them to be a friend.
In my friendship invitation I always include the following
verbiage:

LAURIE: One of the best ways to start
finding your way around and meeting people in the Gaia Community is through
the group “Gaia Networking - Enhance Your Community Experience.”
Here is a LINK that will take you there.”

~ What improvements could you suggest
for the Gaia Networking group?

LAURIE: I don’t have any improvements, but I would suggest that we keep on,
keeping on.  That we continue
to reach out, draw in and engage new members. That we not only extend the
hand of friendship, but that we maintain it with regular and sincere
communication.

~ Is there anything about you that you
would like to be known by the Gaia community in general?

LAURIE: Most everything is covered on my Profile
Page (http://holessence.gaia.com/).  The only thing I don’t have on my
Profile Page is my political affiliation.  I am neither democrat nor republican.  I am an active member of the Green Party.  Here is a link to the Ten Key
Values page http://www.gp.org/tenkey.shtml
on the national website.  You
will notice they are very much in keeping with environmental and spiritual
consciousness.

And now back to you dear friends:

As our surprise and gift back to you Laurie has let me know that queries & things about natural health, beauty, supplements, etc) post on and sheI'll run with the ball.

Another really hot topic is the top foods that fight cancer.  She just did a presentation on that at Good Shepherd Hospital to a group of cancer survivors.

Is there anything you wish to say or ask to Laurie as I can see we are all listening & contributing with our hearts <3<3<3<3 's  An example is I asked about natural makeups and this is the two sites Laurie referred me to:

The two 'brands of make-up that I always recommend to my clients are

“Do you see people's auras with your eyes?”
It is much more a case of 'reading' their personal energy signature with my hands.

“How long did the actual writing of the book take?”
It was years in the making.  It is based, in great part, on my dissertation and on the life coaching series I developed, Life Harmony.

“How did you attract a publisher?”
I submitted query letters; and then upon request sample chapters, and now this time, an entire manuscript.  Please note - it is not under contract.  The current publisher who is reviewing it has 12 weeks in which to make a decision as to move forward with it, or not.  My philosophy is this … every 'no' I receive simply puts me that much closer to my 'yes.'

From The Overview of Life Harmony on Laurie's site:

Overview
It is estimated that more than 90% of health problems that bring people into the doctor’s office are stress related.  Stress is but one of the contents found in the “baggage” that most people accumulate as they travel through life.
A close examination of this baggage frequently reveals contents that include other debilitating items such as anger, resentment, non-forgiveness, pessimism, fear and other triggers that can cause unhealthy behavior and ill health.

I'm most inspired while driving, and I dislike driving, go figure. One day years ago I scribbled in my notebook while stopped in a traffic jam this title for a story that I never wrote. However, hint hint, there IS a saying, “My life is based on a true story.”

The story of how one woman ended up where she never wanted to be, and the imaginary tale of how she could receive everything she never knew she wanted.

I think of that title when I read your Life Harmony overview!

I am delighted to pick up this thread featuring Laurie Buchanan.  It took all of last evening to read the full length of this thread.  Many of you have come to know and cherish the “virtual” Laurie as a member of the Gaia community.  I’m one of the lucky ones who knows “Laurie Live!” …and as a woman of many virtues.  I was introduced to Laurie two years ago by a mutual friend who said I “just had to meet Laurie”.  How right that friend was.  I was in the midst of a medical crisis.  I was advised that I needed surgery on my throat—and after two previous failed surgeries; I declared that I would recover without surgery.  And so I began my relationship with Laurie the healer.

Laurie has many modalities that we worked with—reflexology, Reiki, crystals, tuning forks, cranial and detox therapy (with Len Buchanan a/k/a Mr. Laurie).  And Laurie brought in so much more.  Laurie and I focused on my throat chakra, we breathed in blue, we discussed what was working in my life and what wasn’t, where was I not using my voice, etc.  Within less than a year, working with Laurie and other holistic practitioners (and my Western medical professionals) my throat was clear and my health was restored and has remained so—without surgery!

Since then, I continue to share a relationship with HolEssence, Laurie and Len.  This year I began an 8 month commitment to a course that Laurie offers called Life Harmony.  (You can read about it on her website www.HolEssence.com)

It has been life changing.  I have experienced welcome changes in my personal relationships and my career.  When we started this most recent adventure, Laurie suggested that I set a goal to have my writings published.  I found this humorous, but Laurie wasn’t laughing.  So, with Laurie’s encouragement and guidance, I submitted stories to The Monthly Aspectarian and Evolving Your Spirit—two local publications in the Chicago area.  Each magazine published my first submission.  My writing has appeared several times in each since then.

And Laurie is not stopping there—she lovingly pushes me to use my talents, she is a source of support, guidance and knowledge.   As evidenced by this thread and my personal experience, Laurie is a woman who has wisdom to share, is committed to her community, passionate about her work, caring in her relationships …a full partaker in life.   I am grateful for both Laurie and Len in my life.  How could I not be?   Namaste, Laurie.  Namaste.

Barbara -

Thank you so much for stopping by.  You have BOWLED ME OVER!

For my Gaia friends …

I would love you to see the writing of my friend and client, Barbara Redcay.  Her story, Hoods and Masks can be enjoyed on page 43 of the July “Monthly Aspectarian” - here is a LINK for your convenience.

And I'm so glad that she wove my husband Len into her high praise.  Simply put, he is amazing.

By the way, Barbara is a relatively new member of the Gaia Community - please give her a great big warm welcome.

oh Laurie,

I've been crushed by technology.  I typed a long, long comment here and it disappeared into “the internets” but didn't post here when I clicked “post reply”.

I do remember my question for you….

what advice would you give the newlyweds, Laurie and Len, say, 27 years ago, if you could speak to them from your current vantage point?

love,
light,
laughter,
levity, levitation?, levioso?

to all y'all.

We get asked that question on a lot.  And we both answer, almost always in unison …

The secret to our marriage is no television.
(we have not had one for almost 30 years).

We each always have our own book going, but we always have a together book which we read out loud to each other.

We make a point of having a 'date night' once a week.  Sometimes we'll watch a movie on our computer, or maybe we'll go out to the movies (recently we went to see 'The Proposal').  We both love to laugh!
