what does "organic" REALLY mean?

I get a lot of canned answers. It means this. It means that. Most of them make sense at first glance, but seem to fall apart under closer scrutiny.

One of the main ones I get is “it hasn't been contaminated by either man-made pesticides or herbicides”, which looks pretty good at first . Then I started researching the topic a little deeper (the chemicals thing), and i found some things out about “natural” controlling agents being used.

Poison is poison no matter “how”, or WHO makes it. Yes, man-made controlling agents are deadly, but has anyone EVER considered the fact that the controlling agents derived from “natural” sources are just as deadly to humans?

Organically certified crops are just as “tainted” by naturally sourced herbicides and pesticides, and at levels that wouldn't pass the muster for the man-made ones, so the advantage IS again?

According to some articles and information “I'VE” been reading of late, plain old vegetables off the shelf in the local grocers aren't as “tainted” by man-made chemicals as the supposedly “organic” vegetables two displays over, and aren't as expensive as the regular vegetables.

I am in the process of researching the production of “organic” vegetables in a closed environment that would require NO controlling agents of any kind, and using aeroponics as the growing process.

Another part of my research is the process of replacing the missing vitamins and nutrients in the vegetables i grow via mixing water soluable vitamins and minerals in the growing solution during application.

Any thoughts?

Hi Marc,

One of the resorts we're building is situated on an 12 hectare organic farm in the foothills of West Java.  We use a basic pesticide that is comprised of ginger, garlic, and organically grown dried tobacco leaves.  A mixture of the aforesaid is boiled and then put into applicators - to spray on the veggies.

The fertilizer is a big, if not major component.  We use goat poop (organic), and composting.

Our model for resorts includes an organic farm on every property that can sustain a community of 50 or so people…

any thoughts on the best way to do that?  or anyone else, for that matter?

p.s. organic is just a buzz word… like eco or green… the question is, from my perspective, how to grow veggies and food that is optimal for our health and through a process that is in harmony with nature?
