YE water program

Nadia [no longer around] said Dec 6, 2006, 5:13 AM:

Hey, I read about this… Rod, do you know the status of the project currently?

ABOUT US

Thousands of communities in Indonesia are in dire need of sustainable technologies to address the lack of safe drinking water as well as other impairing environmental problems. Recognizing the need for technical volunteer outreach programs to aid such communities, the YE Water Program was founded in June 2004 as part of Yayasan Emmanuel.

Projects - Future Projects - Pulau Macan

The setting of this project is a tiny private island just north of Java in an area known as “the thousand islands.”  There are two groups of people that occupy the island: 1) the local residents that are paid to take care of the island 2) the owners/visitors that come for vacation about twice a month.   Pulau Macan is an ideal location because it has a relatively controlled environment and is convenient distance from Jakarta.

Pulau Macan literally means “Tiger Island” in Bahasa Indonesian, even though there are no tigers on the island. The people of the island (specifically the owners) are environmentally conscious of the potential for developing sound solar energy, rainwater collection, wastewater and solid waste treatment alternatives. YE Water Program was contacted for assistance, and from our preliminary assessment and survey we have defined the following general objectives to achieve once resources allow:

1. Promote environmental education & awareness

2. Upgrade solid waste management

3. Establish appropriate water treatments
