Distance Running

10->100 mile runners UNITE! Generally when I attempt such distances, I walk a good portion of them. A current goal is to push through and RUN. Any marathoners out there?

Ok.  I will start keeping my running diary on this pod!  Kewl!!!  So here goes.

Date: 06SEP06
Run:  School Loop.  4 miles.
Time:  35 minutes
Shoes:  Saucony Grid Hurricanes.  Time for new pair.  About 800 miles on these.  Losing cushion.
Notes:  Awesome run today.  No rules.  Just run. Nice and easy does it.  About 8.5 minute mile pace.  The course has got some nice little hills to it.  I looked at the clock when I left and then I looked at it when I came back.  No watch today.  Temperature was a perfect 64 degrees with a slight breeze and sunshine.  I was zoning by the middle of the 2nd mile.  Cool beans.  See ya' tomorrow!

Steady as she goes.  A nice, no cheat treadmill run.  That damn thing keeps me honest!

I will be out for kid's soccer tomorrow thru sunday evening.  I am going to run anyway from the hotel room.  I will log my miles probably monday evening, maybe sunday evening.

May your feet be on gossamer wings,

E Buzz hoofin' it!!

Treadmill tempo run.

Date:  11SEP06
Run:  Treadmill.  7 miles.
Time:  60 minutes.
Shoes:  Saucony Grid Stratos 2

Another no cheat treadmill run.  I didn't have the time to run this weekend and I ate like crap.  Time to rack up the miles and slash the calories.  I put on two and a half pounds over the weekend.  oooog.  I hate travel food.  Gnar gnar!!

E Buzz keepin' the faith.

P.S.  Jen, you would not think so highly of me if you saw how I ate this weekend!  Back to V8, bananas and string cheese for a while.  And water, water, water!!

I think MORE highly of you if you ran after eating poorly!

I WALKED and WALKED and WALKED and sprinted here and there yesterday.

Today I am gonna eat that pavement! Yum!

Do you ever think of that when you run outdoors? As if your stride is actually consuming something? Do you ever run so far that you're dying for a pair of rollerskates and a bumper to hold onto? It's a frequent craving of mine that I have to fight. A speedy bumper and Haagendaaz.

Sorry about the lack of posting as of late.  My wife and I are pretty devoted to our children and their extracurricular activities.  We have been doing alot of weekend travelling as of late to support our oldest daughter in her persuit of Olympic Soccer.  She is in ODP (Olympic Development Program) for soccer now and it requires lots of driving and hotel stay.  Anyhoo, this puts a strain on my personal fitness goals and more often than not, they get put aside so that time is spent with family and not on my selfish endeavors.  This is not an excuse, but it is a reason.  I read all of the posts here and they keep me motivated and yearning.  Thank you.

This is really Buzz's running blog…but here is some of my own running blog type sharing.

Keep in mind that I think physical energy does relfect my spiritual and emotional work. Saying that, I will say that last week, I was very deeply rooting out old emotions. On Friday I was incredibly sluggish on my run. I ran 11 miles; but all along I kept wondering why I was out there, I had a 1/2 marathon race the next day, i should be resting, blahhhh, blahhhh, blahhh.

Friday evening at supper, I realized that I was done with the releasing of those emotions and I felt good. Maybe the run helped to finally work it out of my system. On Saturday, early in the morning, I realized that I felt great; no aches or pains at all. I ran a great race (for me). I kept focused and put together 13.1 hilly miles at a nine min/mile pace. I did GREAT! Third place! What is even more surprising to me is my Sunday run. I ran 22 miles at less than a 10 min/mile pace. As I got back to the car, I realized that I had the other four miles needed for a marathon still in me. I could have extended the run; but didn't because I was being conservative.

On Monday, I could feel the lactic acid in my quads. I went for a short 3 mile run just to work that out. Today, I feel good: no aches or pains.

My current physical condition is something of a miracle to me. I have never been this fit; and I have been a runner all my 47 years. Was it the diet? The shoes? The spiritual and emotional healing? I guess all of it.

OMGoodness, Spirit Flower! Congratulations! Both on your 3rd place performance on the half and also for sticking through that trying 11-miler! Wow. I can totally relate to runs like that. I can NOT relate to PLACING in a real race!

You mention several keys to your current physical performance. How long have you been running? How has your approach changed as of late?

Congrats again - I wish I could give you a huge hug - what wonderful accomplishments - and in the FLOW of where you are - in other words, it sounds like it was not a one-time-thing. Truly an inspiration.

I have been working since Dec 03 on detoxing my body and switching to a raw food/spirulina/chlorella based diet. I attribute tons to this. Getting rid of toxins and addictive food additives plus finally getting the needed nutrition with rejuvenating capability.

The second thing happened just this August. I heard about the 3100 mile race which was taking place in NYC. It is sponsored by Sri Chinmoy and its purpose is self transcendance. About 14 people ran around a 0.5 mile city block, covering 50 to 60 miles a day. I became very interested in the only woman: Suprabha Beckjord, age 52, who is the only person to run it ten years in a row!

I searched out various quotes from Suprabha and Sri Chinmoy. Their thoughts on running and self transcendance were very inspiring. One of their pieces of inspiration was to just keep going, even when it hurts. For some reason, that week, I upped my milage from about 30 to 50, with a 13 mile long run (vs the previous 9 mile limit). I never got a running injury from this radical move. I think my body must have been capable but my mind had limits.

So now, I just keep self transcending!  I try to self transcend in both running and spirituality. Running and Being go together.

OK.  That was a pathetically long break in running.  And it took it's toll on me.  Tonight I did 3.5 miles on the treadmill in 30 mins.  30 minutes!!!  Aaaaaagh!!!!!!  No problem.  Little hill.  Baby steps to recovery.  I will work back up to my 7.5 min. mile slowly.  I am 40.  No doin' it in 2 weeks like the old days.  Maybe a month.  But not 2 weeks.  Losing the 10 lbs I put on won't hurt either.  Ugh.  So once again my treadmill and I are on speaking terms.  That's my log for today.  See ya' tomorrow.

This Sunday I ran my first marathon (26.2 miles). I ran 2hr 59min and was fortunate to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I've been involved in triathlon for a few years now and had ran a few half marathons but never a full. First, I must admit it's an enduring race that is inspiring to watch and finish.

A good friend of mine, who ran no more than once a week, trained for 4 months and was able to complete her first marathon is speedy time. So to all those interested please understand that patience and consistency is super important and with that you can do just about anything you set your mind to. Build slowly and you're definitely see the results.

Congratulations on your BQ!!! And on your first try, very commendable :) I hope to get there myself someday. I ran my first in October as well, but was about 20 minutes off my BQ time. Personally I don’t think I could have pushed myself too hard on this first one, and am glad I didn’t try. My next marathon is a completely different story though!

Re: Distance Running

Spirit Flower [no longer around] said Dec 18, 2006, 5:59 AM:

Hi, I haven't posted here for a long time!

In October, I finished my first marathon in 12 years with a PR, 4:14. Then I ran another one in November with another PR, 4:10. I even got second place in my age group. When I was 19 (28 years ago), I ran my first marathon in 4:20. So I am better now than the young 19 year old. Now, the 19 year old could run 6 minute miles, which I can't do today. But the 19 year old did not have an enduring mind, and squandered the last 6 miles of her marathon in an hour and 20 minutes. The 47 year old mind keeps going even if it hurts, until the gas tank is completely dry.

I am also sure that a completely raw diet improves training and healing. I can train 50 - 80 miles a week because of the great energy I eat. (No toxins at all)

Yesterday, I took a 28 mile training run. Barring weather, Jan 1 will be my first ultra.

Wow, an ultra.  How exciting!  I'm gearing up to train for my second marathon, and am really paying much more attention to what I eat.  I was a health nut the first time around, but even so I don't think I fueled my body in the most efficient manner.  The power of natural foods is really amazing.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the distance marathon training should peak out at?  Last time around I hit 23 miles and then tapered, but some training plans I'm considering only have me doing 20 mile runs as my longest runs.  Has anyone found keeping runs at a 20 mile max to be beneficial, or has anyone found it to hinder race day performace?  The little voice in the back of my head keeps saying “No, run more,” but at the same time looking back I don't know that those 3 extra miles in training really made or broke my race.

Re: Distance Running

Spirit Flower [no longer around] said Dec 20, 2006, 12:17 PM:

Regarding the long training run: I make my decisions based on my individual needs. Am I running a marathon just to finish or am I “racing?” Does my body feel good or am I nursing an injury? Do I plan to stay at marathon fitness and be a marathoner as a permanent condition or just for one marathon? My last marathon, a PR, I still did my long run. I ran a little less during the week and ran a slow 10 miler the day before. I ran a pr because my mind was in the game the whole way. Yes, my legs could have been fresher.

Last summer, as I wondered how anyone could run an ultra, and my weekly long run was 9 miles, I read that when it hurts, just keep going. You will be able to tell if it is a serious injury or a training effect that needs to be endured. I tried it and I was fine.

Very surprising to me. I have run 20 - 30 mile training runs every weekend for several months. That used to be impossible for me due to injurines, but I have no injuries now….so I just keep running.

It is rainy today, but very warm (42 degF). I think I will put on my rainsuit and go running.

OK.  This takes some s'plaining.  As of last Tuesday, I was called to fill in at another post for the commanding officer that took sick.  This post requires 7 to 10 miles of walking in the course of a 10 hour day on concrete and blacktop.  So a) the daily running was out of the question and b) I also took ill within two days and spent the whole weekend sick hence no recent running log posts.  So, without further adieu,

Today's run; short and fast.  3 miles.  The last at 8 minute mile pace.

Date:  05FEB07
Run:  3 miles on treadmill.
