Have anyone's knees “gone bad” via running hills and then come back to strength, fluidity, painlessness??? How did you do it?

Hey Jen,

I don't know what kind of knee trouble you're having, however, running causes my knees to hurt, but I refuse to stop.  Smart?  Stupid?  I don't know, but I find that giving them a break (at least a day in between) really helps.  In addition, if you're in the gym doing leg extensions, turning your feet to the inside for some reps and then outside for some reps helps strengthen your muscles on the sides of your knees which helps keep your knee cap in alignment.  My pain is sometimes on the inside and outside of my knees.  I hope this helps a little.

Knees are complicated little beasties. If your having problems I highly advise you get them looked at.

Alternatives are to review what you currently do and how you do it. Changing your stride pattern so there is less impact could help (try landing on the forefoot and then heel so you use more of the bodies natural suspension elements for example)

I'd have a look at your trainers as well, are they old and worn? Are they correct for your running style? (protonation etc)

Alteratively it could simply be repetition that is causing the problems, so it could be worthwhile adding other sports to your mix that will exercise the muscle groups differently like squash, yoga or circuits.

And as a final one if your having problems, remember RICE. Rest Ice Compression and Elevation to help reduce recovery periods.

Yes. I did it with yoga….. PATIENT hatha yoga… and when they were stronger weights…. but here is the catch. Once you hurt something, its a weakness, so as you improve in your yoga and squat heavier weights becoming over confident can set you back to square one!!!
