1Vector3 I I heard that movie attendance in the US is UP despite economic hard times. I assume people get tired of being at home watching DVD's and want to GO OUT and be entertained. What do you think? (8 months ago)

FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT MOVIES

FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT MOVIES

The best source of information on movies which we have run across is not any particular website–though we invite you to post on our Bulletin Board http://pods.zaadz.com/zfilms/discussions/board/4105 any good websites you know of.

IMO the very best source is an annual reference book called Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever: The Complete Guide to Movies on Videocassette and DVD. It has more information than you can imagine even thinking to ask, organized in more ways than you could dream of!!!!!!! Of course, they run about a year behind, but they cover back to the early days of film-making. And of course, they are American-oriented, but some films from other countries are mentioned.

We urge you to check out Gaia Community Bookmarks on “Movies.” There are over 160 entries.    http://bookmarks.zaadz.com/tagged/movie.

When I want to quickly find reliable and thorough detail about a movie I usually check out Wikipedia first, but there are lots of interesting places to find info on the web.  I've never looked at that book you mentioned.  I'm sure my local library has copies of it.

In my The Dark Knight review, I mentioned one of my favorite websites that is partly about movies.  Its actually about media in general, and isn't so much about reviewing movies in the normal sense.  Its called TV Tropes Wiki.  I'll start a thread about it.

For whatever reason, not many people are interested in blogging about movies on Gaia.  Some blogging communities are overflowing with blogs about movies.  I find some of the most interesting information on blogs.

Blessings,
Marmalade

Well we'll scrounge up those who do, here. Meanwhile feel free to post anything from anywhere else you feel is appropriate to copy to here.

Never would have thought of looking in Wikipedia. I'm just not fully in this century yet!!!! Thanks so much for the tip !!!!

I am hoping some IMDB fans will tell me how to use the darned site. I find it hard to use.

And there are other good places too, just awaiting discovery !!!

Blessings, OM Bastet

You'd be surprised what you can find on Wikipedia.  Its an amazing site.  What is nice about Wikipedia entries is that it has links at the bottom of the page.  The links provided will be to official sites and other sites where additional info can be found.  I suppose Wikipedia wouldn't necessarily have an entry for every film, but it has a pretty extensive listing (see below).

If you want to know more about IMDb, then here is the Wikipedia entry.  :)

And here are some other entries that might interest you:

  • Category:Film
  • List of basic film topics
  • List of film topics
  • List of video-related topics
  • Lists of films
  • List of years in film
  • List of film awards
  • List of film festivals
  • List of film journals and magazines
  • Cinematic techniques
  • Digital cinema
  • Lost film
  • Web film

The sites I go to are different depending on my purposes.  Wikipedia is good for general information, but it doesn't offer the extensive reviews of sites that are dedicated to that purpose such as Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic, and Allmovie.

Personally, though, I have another site that I use to make quick assessments about movies.  The site I speak of is Netflix.  It offers reviews on practically evey movie that has ever come out, but that isn't the primary reason I like it.  The primary reason is that it tells me how similar I am to each reviewer, and so I know which reviews to pay attention to.  This is extremely helpful.  However, you have to belong to Netflix for this to be of any use to you.

I just noticed a possibly cool site: The Internet Movie Script Database.  It could be fun looking up the scripts of some of my favorite movies.
